The World Games 2009 Kaosiung - Billiard Games Division

The World Games are held under the auspices of the International World Games Association (IWGA). It is made up of 32 International Sports Federations governing all those sports and disciplines of sports which are eligible for participation in the Official Sports Program.

The organization of The World Games is entrusted by the IWGA to an Organizing Committee formed by the host city and entities such as the National Olympic Committee, the regional government, etc. The World Games are staged over a period of 11 days. They start with the Opening Ceremony and conclude with the Closing Ceremony.

Billiard sports are played in over 100 countries around the world spanning five continents. The number of registered players is estimated at over 100 million. The sports are enjoyed by a global television audience made up of male and female, young and old viewers.

The three divisions of Billiards (Catagory: Precision Sports) - Carambole, Pool and Snooker - are derived from the same game but have all developed separate identities, creating their own set of rules and governing bodies around the world. All the divisions of Billiards Sports are now working together harmoniously for the future of the game and its continued expansion.

All disciplines have three pieces of basic equipment in common. Each game is played on a table, with or without pockets, which is covered in cloth. The thickness of the weave of this cloth 'nap' varies between disciplines. Each discipline uses a cue which varies in length and different colored balls. The skill lies in moving the balls around the table and points are scored by either potting the balls or deflecting them off as many edges as possible.

Billiard sports made their debut in the World Games in Akita in August 2001 and certainly made a lasting impression. Each year tournaments are held all over the world organized by the national governing bodies. Players from different countries also compete against each other in tournaments organized by their world governing bodies.

by the way does anybody know how the players were selected to participate? It's obvious there is some geographic principle and all the WPA members present (like Africa and Oceania included). But what about Asia and America and Europe? Did they hold some sort of qualifier or the federations (APBU, EPBF and BCA) just selected top (?) players from their rankings?
Same question refers to snooker and carom. Anyone?

I haven't ever heard of a qualifier for the World Games. I believe that for carom and pool, the confederations get quotas and distribute them according to rankings. For carom, a few top-ranked people might go through without using their confederation's quota.

By the way, I made a little research on how the participants did here in Kaohsiung back in 2005 (it's the WPC won by Wu, not Alex, he won on the previous year, I was a bit wrong above). 10 out of 16 pool players played in 2005. And can you imagine, 5 of them were in the same group no16 at the qualifying round! They were Po-cheng Kuo, Ralf Souquet, David Reljic, Luong Chi Dung, Ivica Putnik. Guess who didn't make it to the KO brackets with 4 players going through? The Kaiser. He played terrible, lost 5 of 7 matches. I hope he does fine here in Kaohsiung now.
