Tried some nice custom cues today

Playing the table

I stopped in a pro shop in downtown Tokyo today and found some nice cues for sale. The clerk said that they were just purchased in Las Vegas. A beautiful Capone caught my eye, then a few Daytons, and some Cokers too. There's a table in the shop, and the clerk was kind enough to let me play with them. They all had beautiful butts with stunning wood, razor-sharp points, and perfect veneers. They were all well balanced, and I couldn't feel a difference in hit between them -- they were all exquisite. The only problem was the rough shaft on the Capone. If it wasn't for that, the Capone would have been my favorite of the three based on the individual cue's style. Because of the shaft, Dayton took the honors. But, with the expection of the Capone's shaft, they were all awesome. I recommend Dayton and Coker highly, and of course Capone if the one you get has a better shaft.

LC3- Check out www.onthehill.net if you like those cues. Troy (owner OntheHillQSales) is a good friend of mine, tell him I sent you if you find something you like. He bought some nice new cues at the BCA Show this year.

Thanks, Zim. I've been looking at one of the AE's he has listed. If I can get it past the wife, I'll buy it.

Be sure to tell him I sent you and I'm sure he'll get a good deal for you!

What are the names of some cue retail shops in Japan? Anyone know of any shops or dealers there?

Thanks,
Zim

I can't remember the name of the place where I saw those cues (if I ever knew it), just how to get there. There's another place I stumbled across, but it was more a mail order closet than a retail shop. I can tell you this though: there are no deals here, especially not for custom cues.

Hey Zim,
Over here in Okinawa there are only two places where you can buy retail sticks(and one guy who buys them off of ebay then charges double the sugg retail for them) the only thing Ive seen is Viking and McDermott and some other cue by Vipper? that seems to be popular over here. The main thing is that they want any where from $100 to $200 over retail over here because they know you don't have anywhere else to go unless you go online.

Thanks knudsenjj! I'll probably be stationed there in a few years and I'll be sure to keep what I'm hearing about the price of cues in mind!

hey LC3, can u post some pics of your Dayton? thanks
When I said the Dayton won the honors, I meant that it was my favorite of the three. I didn't buy it though -- certainly not at those prices. I will own a Dayton, but it'll come directly from Paul.

LC3- How do you like the DZ cue? Do you still have it? I was looking at some of his cues, but he's backed up over a year!

I love it. Bob Dzuricky makes an awesome cue. The hit on mine is stiff, but not too stiff. I get great action on the cue ball. The workmanship is first-rate too. It sent the Jacoby I had before it right to eBay. I communicated a lot with Bob during the planning phase, and it's obvious that he knows how a cue should be built. In fact, he's making another cue for me now.

I haven't heard much about DZ cues, in fact you're the 1st one I've met to own one. How long is it going to take for him to make this cue for you? I have a Jacoby j/b getting made right now, should be done anytime.

Zim

The cue he's making for me now is a sneaky pete. It should be done around the end of September.

The Jacoby I used to have hit like a battering ram and would've made an excellent break cue.

bob dzuricky (ZA-ricky) the stradivarius of todays cuemakers no offense intended to any others. THE BEST HIT.

Billy Jungle- I see you're from the same town as Bob! How long have you been playing with a DZ cue? What else have you played with that you can compare it to?

hi Zim. I always read but seldom write.Have played off & on with a DZ since 1997.Have also had 2 nice prathers,a doug borque,a heubler,an espiritu,a pechauer and an old brunswick willie hoppe but IMO the dzuricky feels the best Every so often I try a new cue searching for one I like better,or am curious to try others work, but none do.My next cue to try will be a bludworth. sincerely billy j

I feel the same way about my DZ. When I got it, I thought it was too light. I weighed it and found that it was the same as the Jacoby I had at the time, but was better balanced. I was worried that I wouldn't like playing with a cue that felt so light, but I was pleasantly surprised by how solid and precise the hit was. My DZ easily holds its own against the three cues I tried.

Sorry if i misunderstood you. I'm waiting for Paul to finish my cue and I'm just wondering what everyone else thinks about his cues.

Dayton's cues are keepers. Everything about the ones I've seen were top-notch. I have no doubt you'll be happy with yours. Please post a picture when you get it.
