Try This for Air Fare

I am going to Vegas just to go and not for any pool tournament. Staying for one week. Looking for the best price on air as we all do I found this interesting.

There are cheaper fares available if you are willing to go out of your way with a few stops and lay overs. Your time also has to be flexible and willing to take times that may not be the best.

Wanting to leave Det in the morning and Vegas in the afternoon using only non stop there are not many choices.

Found Delta with a flight that matched what I was looking for, $706 round trip for 2. Went to Delta Vacations and got the same flight with a car for the whole week for $726. Didn't need a room as I was getting comped for 5 nights and the other nights were almost free. Staying at Wynn.

Try Delta Vacations. The only thing with using them is you have to either book a room or car along with the flight. It is nice to have the car as it gives you some freedom to get off the strip without the expense of a cab. Going to and from the airport costs about $20 with tip each way so that pays for extra.

Just a quick tip, have another $350-$400 ready when you land for the insurance on that rental that they'll make you get.

Not true. Check with your credit card company and car insurance provider. Both usually cover it.

Great Deals to Vegas through Expedia

About a month ago I priced a trip through Expedia to Vegas, Non stop flights Leaving Detroit May 11 and Returning on the May 22 ( for the World Pool Masters BCAPL and US Open 10 ball championships.

The total cost for a round trip ticket non stop and 11 nights at the riviera including a free shuttle from the airport and 2 free tickets to any show I wanted was $826.......to me that is one hell of a deal.

I have never purchased the extra insurance. My personal insurance covers me no matter what car I drive. You might want to check with your own insurance company. Depends on your policy, but mine has me covered.

You don't HAVE to take the insurance if your insurance covers you in a rental car (and many do!)
They'll try and ask you what your deductible is, to lay a guilt trip on you, just say "I don't know" or "non of your business" and decline the "added" insurance. Yes. Initial "here" that you decline. Initial "here" that they will take your deductible in case of an accident...

And drive off happy

Yeah, I tried that. Unless you have a NV auto policy, you have to buy the insurance.

BS. They roped you into buying insurance! They lied and you ate it...
Nevada is not exempt from your own car insurance policy, neither is it exempt from your credit card coverage. I think you've been had.

I always use www.kayak.com to compare flights and find prices. Putting in your locations and using arbitrary dates in mid-April, I find round-trip prices of $219 person.

Well, I told them I didn't want the insurance. They said I couldn't get the car without it unless I had a NV policy. I said if that's the case, give me a refund & cancel the reservation, & that's exactly what they did.

You are right on. 100%.

I have a second home in Vegas, so I rent a car often. I got hit in the MGM parking deck once, while I was in the pool. MGM claims that they have no camera on that spot (prolly bs) and I rented the car on my credit card. Long story short, the credit card covered the damage. All of it. No deductibles.

My wife just flew Delta and was slapped with a $25 charge for each checked bag. Not a huge expense, but this could be very irritating if you've spent some time shopping around to save $20 or $30 only to have it eaten up by baggage fees.

They all charge bag fees, starting with the first bag, now.

Not true. I have auto insurance in California issued by MetLife out of New York. I have rented cars in Vegas many times with no problems. Any good policy should cover you wherever you are in the USA. No good in Mexico or overseas though.

It is also quite easy to get an International drivers license (thru AAA the easiest way). Then you can rent cars overseas without hassle.

Baggage fee

They do NOT all charge a baggage fee. At least Southwest Airlines does NOT.

Tim,

I rent eight to nine times a year in Vegas for two weeks each. Never been required to buy insurance. My auto policy covers me (my agent). Each rental agent tries as hard as possible to sell you the insurance. Must be a commissionable item. The latest is telling you you must pay for the car while it is being repaired if you have an accident and don't buy their coverage. BS!!!!

I do suggest however you carry your proof of insurance with you while in Vegas. The Clark County police departments tend to dislike drivers without that proof. Even if it's a rental car. They really think Hertz will rent you a car to drive without proof of coverage. I know from personal experience!

Thebook,

Try Southwest.com. Under Air in the blue highlighted area, look for low fare calendar. Put the flight dates in. My bet is you will find flights for less than other major airlines. Not sure if SW flies direct to Vegas or not from Detroit. You might have to fly through Chicago Midway. SW does not charge for your first two bags. The third however is not free. Don't know how much as I never fly to Vegas with checked baggage.
