I'll be in Las Vegas for a couple of days in April and would appreciate recommendations on where to play.

Depending on what you're looking for, I've been told the Cue Club is the place to shoot when in Las Vegas, a little bit of something for everyone!

Hi fliedout,

JAM's correct about the Cue Club. You should also visit Pool Sharks on Decatur near Spring Valley. There are great players in each place. There are a couple of other "big table" rooms in town. The best players are at the Cue Club and Pool Sharks. There is also a very big bar box scene. Tournaments every night somewhere in town. Where are you staying? Will you have a car?

I'm staying on the strip and won't have a car. My evenings may be tied up, so I'm mainly looking for a good place to play if I get some free time during the day.

Fliedout,

From the center of the "Strip" around Caeser's, a cab ride to either room will cost the same. I'd recommend the Cue Club during the day. If you play one pocket, there are quite a few players. "Little" Fred with the walker, Big Fred, Gabe "The Mailman" and a few others hang. Paul Briensa works at Pool Sharks. Nice guy, great player. Might see you there middle of April. Good luck regardless!

I went to the Cue Club a few weeks ago, while visiting Vegas, and watched a guy using a walker. This must have been Fred. He was playing with a southwest looking cue. He seemed to play pretty good. Anyways I'll be visiting again this weekend. Where are the tournaments on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday? And what times do they start?

Hi g monster,

Thats him. Nice guy!

Friday night there is a bar box tournament at Dealers Choice on Spring Valley near Decatur. A few of Vegas' best bar boxers play regularly. A couple of other bar box events on the weekends but very small. Most bars throw in $100. No entry fee. Pay four places at 40/30/20/10. When I'm there, I play Saturday at the Double Diamond Saloon at Jones and Cheyenne. Sad but true, thats all there is. They start at 7 PM. If you are going to be there on a regular basis, look in the bars for the Southern Nevada 8/9 Ball League magazine. It lists all the local bar box events. Also, check at the Rum Runner on Tropicana at Spencer. They usually know whats going on. While your there, go across the street to Carluccio's Tivoli Gardens. Some of Vegas' best Italian food! Everything else is weekdays on the big tables.

I've been at Dealers when more then twenty players have been there. Usually, its between ten and twenty. Ten dollars entry. House adds five per player. Doesn't seem like much but, thats all there is. The Cue Club's tournaments are run by Torch Janes. Does a very good job. Starts everyone unknown out as an eleven out of twelve and moves them from there. "Thumbs" over at Pool Sharks does the same thing Monday nights. I think both entries are $15. If you're going to be in Vegas late in March, ask about the BIG bar box event at the Tropicana Rum Runner. First class event. Big, big money!!!!!!! Field limited to sixty four. Always fills fast. $100+ entry fee.

Sorry GM, all weekday big table events in Vegas are handicapped. Everyone new starts out (if my memory serves me) at an eleven of twelve.

Bar box events are usually open. Some are A/B. In March, the Rum Runner on Tropicana hosts two of the best events around. An open $125 entry with player auction and a B only event the week before. If no one knows you in Vegas, you would have to play in the open event. There are rankings for all Vegas players listed in the Southern Nevada League paper.

I've been to the cue club when out on vacation very nice room. We played a litte billiards on a heated table?? They say it makes it run truer? But the place was really big and nice. There was an article about it in Inside Pool magazine. When out there we also went to Cuetopia, I'm not sure it's even around any more, it was alright small butt i could tell it was somewhat of a players room. the way the tables were seporated. Someone had also told me about this place called Pinky's?? it sounded to me more like and adult arcade than a pool room.

Hi poolbiz,

You must not have been to the Cue Club in several years. Both the billiards table and the snooker table are long gone. They have been replaced by four old bar box tables. Rumor has it that they will soon be replaced with four new Diamond's!!!! Someone attempted to re-open Cuetopia last year without success. Your evaluation of Pinky's is right on! Again the rumor mill has it that Pinky's will be plowed under for a ???parking lot??? :p

You are right it has been like geez 6 years since i had been there (to the cue club). My wife and myself try to go to Las Vegas once a year it's hard for me to sneak away, but she's now getting more into pool after this years Glass City Open so maybe this year we will be able to go down there and check the changes out. Is it true the pockets on their gold crowns are only 4-1/8" wide?
Our one table has 4-3/8" i couldn't image being down on a ball and seeing that small of a pocket!

Poolbiz,

I never measured the pockets on tables #1 through #9. I can tell you they are somewhat "tight". If you hit the shot into the pocket opening, it falls. If you hit an inch short, it doesn't. Ernesto was there doing the tables last spring. I watched him work for an hour. He appears to be a great table mechanic. All pool players on the west coast benefit from his hard work. :)
