What Made You Decide To Play Tournaments?

Just wondering what it was that made everyone decide they finally wanted to venture out and start playing in some tournaments? Assume the following could be factors:

1) skills increased
2) urging of friends
3) location of tournament
4) cool thing to do
5) why not?

I wanted to start playing after a buddy went to a how to meet girls seminar and heard that playing pool gets hot chicks.

Oh wait, that was you who told me that, nevermind.

I have recently started playing tournaments in order to steel my nerves for money games and league matches. For whatever reason, tournament play makes me nervous so I figure the more I play them, the better I'll get at overcoming the yips.

6) Money.

Although all the good money tournaments have pretty much died around here. No one wants to run a calcutta anymore and that's where most of the money ends up being. That or they wanna take a 20 person tourny and pay out 6 places which cuts the money down to nothing.

Pool is best played when it's played under pressure. I don't travel in the "money game" world anymore but enjoy competing when there is something at stake. Finishing well in a tournament provides that "something". Competing when it means something is a level above recreational pool. It builds character and improves one's game. It's also quite simply more fun.

The best way to test your skill(s) is combat. You know the old sayings:
"Feet to the Fire" ... Where the Rubber meets the Road" ... and countless others.

I discovered early-on that playing for money, even small money, brings your true skill(s) to the forefront. That is when and where you test your "Mettle".

I'm I correct to assume that in all these years of posting here, asking instructors for advices, etc...you didn't actually play in any tournaments? Wow.

Why would he follow others advice when he knows better than they do.

Tournaments offer the best odds on the money. I always laugh when the gamblers make fun of tourny players. But a tourny player can spend 80 to win a 1000 now i think thats the best odds in the business.

Pressure, plain and simple.

A friend of mine was stuck $280 friday night in a ring game before he won a game. He ended up plus $500 for the night.

In a tournament, usually if you lose two matches, you go home.

In order,

2 - because they are all insane :D
1 - because they are all better than me :banghead:

IMO, its always good to go and test the waters against people you dont regularly play. It brings something fresh to the table. The bonus fluff of cash on the line doesn't hurt either!

I was tired of losing to league players....by entering tournaments, I found a whole new list of players and a nice sized audience to lose to....

Tournaments allow you to test your skills in a different environment, expose you to pressue, allow you to watch a variety of players, and there is a social component....I like to meet new players and match up with new folks....

quenching
Plunging hot metal into water after it has been forged to shape. It is important to judge exactly the right time to do this. If it is done too soon the metal may become brittle and shatter easily; but leave it too long to quench and the metal may be too soft to sharpen into an edge. Sometimes, it is necessary to re-heat metal to the correct temperature before quenching it.

That's as good of analogy as I can think of at the moment. I pretty much shattered under the pressure of this last weekend at Music City but I have full intentions of firing my game back up and showing up to the DCC 9ball for another dip in the bucket....

I started playing in tournaments solely to improve my skills. It is the cheapest way to get a game with some of the best players in the area. My first month of playing was a series of donating $5 to play 4 games (2 losses in the winner’s bracket and 2 more losses in the loser’s bracket). That is some real incentive to play better.
