Why do people get so pissy when a person is using cap locks?

Just what is stated in the title why are people so pissy when others use cap locks? I know its considered yelling but what is really the big deal? I mean I would get more pissed if the person couldn't spell correctly and every other word took a map to figure out, than them using cap locks but just wanted to know why it bothers so many people?

IT'S KIND OF MEANINGLESS REALLY I GUESS.....I NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT?

I know it freaks some people out like you said.....Gerry

Because it looks like you are yelling, it is hard to read and it isn't proper. Why didn't you write your post in all caps? Because it's not the right thing to do.

You ever meet those people that talk too loud all the time, well you just met the same type of person to type in all caps.

BUILT IN INTOLERANCE OF OTHERS. well, some people think that it is difficult to read the script in caps .As a result of that kind of thinking,it somehow got incorporated into the Ms.Manner`s rules.

I write in all caps, block letters, like an architect would, no one feels like I'm YELLING at them when they read my hand writing. I think it's friggin silly. Also how can something "look like your yelling?"......yelling is a sound, ...not a sight. Kind of like saying.........see how quiet this is?.....it does'nt work.......Gerry

No, it's more like:

THIS IS YELLING

this is a whisper

It goes back to the day where your only real option for this kind of interaction was Usenet, and it was all basic text. There was no other way to make some text stand out from some other parts of the message.

Other ways to emphasize things were to _use underscores_ to block the words out, and asterisks generally denoted an action.

*sigh*

It all depends on what you're used to and if you are willing to learn what used to be called 'nettiquite', assuming that I spelled that right. If you don't understand it and want to use caps, that's fine. But most people will take a pretty negative view of your message before even reading it.

Because

Because, there are specific things about internet chatting and forums that people use to illicit certain EMOTIONS that are otherwise indetectable in writing. You have been told obviously, that CAPITALS CONTITUTE YELLING!, so when you read something in caps it's like they're yelling at you.

When I read I actually here the words in my mind, so WHEN YOU USE CAPS, I literally hear you yelling at me in my head, and it is ANNOYING. I don't know if that's the same reason others have a problem with it though and I've never complained to anyone about their use of caps either.

Until now atleast, and that's only because you ASKED!

I agree with you.One is programed to believe that capitals constitute yelling and as a result one feels yelled at when one sees the capitals.
But how did this belief start and who started that?

Sorry don't know?

I don't know who started it but it's forever ingrained in my head now so it will always SEEM LIKE YELLING TO ME!!!!! LOL...

it's internet etiquette. and in the case you're refering to,,,the poster is also being curt.

Maybe writing in a conventional manner is just a matter of common courtesy and a fine idea if you really want people to bother to read your posts. Failure to use upper and lower case letters combined with long paragraphs make a post not worth my time and effort to read.

If caps were meant to be for the print then lower case should be the exception. The shift key should from caps to lower case or just eliminate lower case. I remember back in grade school I thought that I found a loop hole. I wrote a paper and printed all caps figuring that I could not get marked down for not using caps in the proper places. Wrong. I got the paper back and had to rewrite it using caps and lower case. I think a lot of people use caps today because they do not know when to captalize so like I did in grade school they just use all caps or they don't want to use the shift key to make a letter a cap. So instead of all lower case they use all upper case. No big deal. With all of the other inconsiderate and rude manners that people now display to others in public I don't see why someone would get offended by reading something in caps. As someone said somehow it got to the point of where it is as if someone is yelling but that is only if you know the rule.

As anybody that has played pool with me can attest to, I'm danged near blind too! The solution is to make adjustments to the settings of your own computer, not expect the rest of the world to adjust to you.

If he doesn't know how, he should have someone tweak custom settings for him to display larger fonts. I display whatever text I want to see on any website and type all of my e-mails in oversized fonts. The person receiving them still gets standard sizing.

Before the screaming starts, I will point out I have never commented about anyone using all caps except here where the thread starter asked what the problem was. I just skip posts that are a pain in the ass to read.

That might explain why he never seems to understand the posts directed at him

What if you opened a newspaper one day and everything was in caps? I don't complain about other's writing style but it is refreshing to open a thread and read posts where there's no..........hiccups. We all make mistakes with our spelling but more times than not, it's because we rush when we type. When I read a post by someone with every other word spelled wrong, it's kind of frustrating. But, I feel that if they knew how to spell the word, then they would have spelled it right. If it's spelled the way it sounds, then it's not so bad, but sometimes I wonder how someone could come up with the things they do. Anyway, as far as all caps go, what's the big deal? Different, yes, but what are ya gonna do? Read it and be happy they gave you something to do, I guess. Peace, John.

He could always adjust his font size.

Netiquette seems to be a dying phrase. For example, you wouldn't like it if someone just walked up and grabbed your ass, right? That wouldn't be proper etiquette. Instead, they should walk up and introduce themselves first, then politely carress it instead. Here's a link for you.
