Okay cue makers, What is the purpose of a pad behind the cue tip?

Thanks for your answers.

Usually it comes on cues with an ivory ferrule... The idea is as leather compresses the leather can cause the ferrule to crack. The pad prevents this

He is correct except i think a few have determined the pad is not neccesary if the ferrule is full capped ivory and not really necesary for any other type of ferrule. Let's see what Mr. webb has to
say , he is usually the one to listen too

If were talking carbon shafts it's a barrier for the vault plate sometimes, wood : I've heard it softens the hit, protects the Ferrell but I think it's mostly for looks. A kamui with a clear pad cut clean does look nice 🤷🏻‍♂️

The pad us to prevent the ivory from splitting. Not from impact but from the tip compressing outward.

The pad allows you the ability not to have to face the ferrule every time you change a tip.

Over years if you face the ferrule each time the ferrule gets shorter.

Before you get too close to the ferrule, you just glue on another then do the tip.

Howdy All;

Thanks for the responses. I was just trying to figure if it was a cosmetic or functional thing.
