I have been thinking about this for a couple weeks now and want to approach the owner of the pool hall i frequent about this, but not sure if people would commit to it. But this is the basic lowdown on how the tournament would be set up.

Fee : 20$/5$ for green fee

Race to 7, Finals race to 9 winner breaks double elim.

No AA players

No limit on how many players can show up

there would be a Calcutta

It would be a tournament series where to play in the Finals tournament you would hafta play in 5 of the tournaments to qualify. Finals tournament would be Last friday of every other month.

First place in the Finals would be Minimum 500$

First place in weekly tournament based on 32players / 175$

I would make it every two weeks. A lot of the weekly tournament become same old-same old and the players dwindle. You want full fields and good tournaments. You may have a scheduling problem also. If it is a small pool room and depending on how many tables you will be using. You may be there pretty late trying to play a 32 player D.E. race to 7. I have found players get sick of playing till 2 am or the winner side player sitting around for hours waiting to play. You may want to play single elimination and all races to 9. You didn't say if it is to be handicapped. That presents the worst problems.

by aa players what do you mean? would that be the same as an "A" player or would you be talking about the open/pro players?

if you're talking about pro players thats fine. if you aren't going to let the local "A" players in, i'd say alternate, let the "A" players play in every other tourney. this way, you don't leave anyone out, and you actually help yourself and the other players out, as it would give them a chance to play the better players in the area cheap. otherwise they would want to gamble when someone wanted to play. remember, you get better by playing better players, and if you limit the better players entry, you'll just have bangers playing bangers. you don't have to let the top guys in every time, but i'd let them in about half the time if i were you.

bangers turn into players, players turn into pros

thanks

I agree with VAP. With that low of an entry I would have no problem entering when the best players are there. I prefer to play the better players, even if it means I loose....in the end it helps my game.

Depending on the turnout and the number of tables in the room, I would suggest that this be a multi-day event if the races are gonna be that long.

Honestly, i never thought about this being a handicap tournament.

As for not letting in the AA players, I could make it so theres nobody rated A or AA in the tournament. I honestly have no clue what the A or AA rating is lol. I think people like Jason Kirkwood is rated AA, or better. But i am basically trying to get a tournament where you dont hafta deal with the Regional tour players or the road players, who are going to drive just to take everyones $$$

And the entry fee is so it doesnt attract the big time players, who are going to drive across state or 3 hrs to play.

As for the tables it would be on 7ft tables, and i believe there is 9 tables available to play on. I could also have winners side race to 7, and loser side race to 5. so like you said your not there till 2am lol.

now i never thought of allowing the A or AA players in the tournament every other tournament, althought its a thought.

But anyways i am going to bring it upto the owner this comming friday, and also talk to other players about it too. I already have several guys interested in it, which is a plus.

But thanks for the IDEA's :)

decided to weigh in this discussion against my better judgement,,,,every room has a different version of how to run a tournament & rightly so,,,each city/town has its local and sometimes stupid ordinances dealing with a pool room,,,I tend to approach things my own way 'cause I see how other things haven't worked in the past,,,,,,some guarantee a certain payout, regardless of how many show up; I add money into the payout, the greater the number in the tourney,,,I have devised a points system in addition to the weekly payout,,,the winner after ten weeks wins a moderately priced stick (xtra incentive to regular players, not really to the A or road player),,,post their names and points on a wall chart for all to see,,,put a top ten finishers post on the wall and leave it up,,,people like to see their name in print, plus it shows other possible players that you have tournaments,,,can't advertise any better than the poolroom wall !
