well if I pay 20$ for this video and it helps me not get sharked 1 time... I would say I made my money back and then some... pending on the stakes I was playing for of course.

so yeh I would honestly probably pay a little bit of cash for an actual good video... even tho I am gettin sharked by purchasing it... I am such a nit :p

This subject needs to be moved to the non-related section...everyone knows there is no sharking in pool...
It would be a wonderful video...I'm sure there are at least a half dozen pool players with that amount of disposable income to lay down for that keepsake...

Ridiculously out of place music (gansta rap in a country bar)
The youngins where we play put in alot of Grunge, I think thats what you call it. Where they just scream into the mike.
Anyway, my wife will take a $20 and shove it into the juke and put in 20 bucks worth of oldies. Good shootin music.

I'd buy a video like that just to know what sort of sharking techniques I can be up against. I recently discovered that I was not as immune to sharking as I thought I was, and a video like that would allow me to "know the enemy" better, so to speak.

As for me, I don't shark by coughing, moving or generally being obnoxious. But on occasions, I do two things that seem to work great:

- As it happen, I have a face that easily says "leave me the hell alone or else". I just use put on that face, keep very still and stare at the other player as they shoot. Even if I'm not in front of the person, they know I'm staring with that Hannibal Lecter mug of mine. It's a surefire way of making them miss.

- If I play 8-ball or 9-ball and I have an obvious shot on the money ball to finish the game, and my opponent is one of these guys who get easily excited, if it's not too dangerous, I'll play a safety. But I'll do so as if I was trying to hold speed back, but not doing a very good job at conceiling it, and obviously missed on purpose. If the "missed" shot looks too convincing, I'll add an emphatic "aaw, I'm soooo unlucky eh..." I've had players go ballistic on that one and quit on me. I've also had a couple of close calls where I almost got punched in the face though...

Those are sharking techniques too I suppose. I don't use them much though, as I rarely play to win, and it shows obvious disrespect for the opponent. But if I'm sharked, I'll do it too.

A short list of some sharks:

3. Ridiculously out of place music (gansta rap in a country bar)
.

Wont always work. Some places will skip the songs, and you just lost your money. Ill sometimes play a George straight song I like and some bartenders will cut it off cause its too slow. Not a shark move I just like George. Had it happen too many times to count.

Id buy it if you could get some of the top pros to give up their moves. I doubt you could get anyone to admit theyve ever done it. Its definitely something different thats for sure.

No, you're probably right but EVERY pro has had someone else do it to them. :D

If you could do a video that shows how to build the mental strength to play through any distraction, especially since you yourself are now shark proof, I think you will be furthering both the sport's appeal and reputation.

Ideas for this different video:
1. Interviews with other sports, like with basketball players on making shots while the opposing supporters are waving all of that Nerf crap behind the hoop and horns are playing/ similar baseball interviews, etc.
2. Interviews with pro pool players on concentration
3. Techniques, like playing two different sound types (radios/ ipod/ bluetooth headphones) at once while you practice... How did you become sharkproof? Share those techniques and the video will make money.

Ooooh! Nice thoughts.

MOST people think they are more immune to sharking than they really are. When I see someone sharked and they miss the shot, often their response will be, "I never saw him move".

shark moves

Back in the day when I used to play...

If the opponent was shooting at the money ball or a key ball shot, we would just fart. Very effective.

Not everyone is prone to sharking. There is a guy on my team you can't do ANYTHING to rattle him. You can tickle him, scream in his ear, wave your hand in his face while he shoots one guy on my team farted in his face while he was down on a shot and he still made it! (had to mention that cause the guy above mentioned farting) it was hysterical and I fell off the bar stool in laughter (obviously it wasn't a league match)

Now on the other hand- one night out of the week I play in a bar league and the whole night there is chatter and stuff going on so you have to shoot with people walking by as you shoot and other distractions. The "shark" I have seen that works the best (and sometimes a persons own team contributes to this!) is when your down to the money ball everything gets SILENT! nobody is talking on either side and it adds that little bit extra pressure to the shot knowing now everyone is focused on you and boom big miss on a simple shot!

Farting on demand is something I've never been able to do, and fart-sharking requires precise timing. Hats off to you :)

As a public service to educate players on unethical tactics that could be used against them, I posted an article on April 1, 2007.

The title is "How to develop an edge and win close matches" but could have been named "Subtle Sharking Techniques."

http://www.billiardcoach.com/home/2007/04/01/how-to-develop-an-edge-and-win-close-matches

Thanks for the link Mike. I scanned the article rather fast but I found myself reading the article and thinking that the author was suggesting that these techniques were a smart and legal way to help you win a match. The fact remains that the author knows the finer points of sharking and explains a lot about sharking and I realize that you allowed the article to be published as a public service to educate players against sharking.

I think if I proceed with such a video I will want to make it clear that these techniques are against the rules of pocket billiards and any player who uses them can be found guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct. Besides earning the condemnation of your opponent, these techniques could help to forfeit your match.

The article was carefully crafted and posted on April 1. ;-) I think a video well done could be entertaining and informative. Here's a quote from the public service article.

Many people make the mistake of believing that they can only control the outcome of the game when they are at the table, so they spend their time exclusively trying to improve their performance. This is fine if you want to win some and lose some. If you want to become a consistent winner however, you will have to change your attitude and recognize the truth. The way you behave while your opponent is at the table, when executed properly, can also play a pivotal role.
Could you imagine George Clooney reading this deadpan on camera?

If you add proposition bets, some sucker bets, woofing techniques and such I would SO buy it!
Look, with today's video production costs you can do it on the cheap. I think it will sell and all those that say they won't buy it will get the DVD just not tell their friends.

By now you would think I am shark proof but like everyone else in the world, sharking can get to anyone. Sometimes it's instantaneous and other times; well, it can take time to break through a player's concentration.

I've studied people for most of my life, especially pool players and I know sharking better than most, although I make special attempts to keep it out of my game.

We have some of the greatest sharkers in the world, here in New Orleans. I think the sharking techniques that I have seen were incubated at the infamous Sport Palace of New Orleans. It was a pool player's gambling mecca for decades and mercy was never shown to the uninitiated.

Anyhow, I was just wondering if the AZ Main Forum members would purchase a video that had two players, playing pool: There would be voice overs that would discuss the particular game, bet and other game situations that was taking place, as well as discussion of the nuances of the shark that was taking place.

This is probably just a waste of time. I doubt if many people would want to pay to see actual sharking take place. It can be seen for free at practically any pool tournament or gambling venue in the world.

The purpose of the video would not be to promote sharking but simply to inform and educate, kind of like the racking techniques/reading the rack discussed by Joe Tucker in his videos.

PLEASE DON'T say you would buy the video because you like me or that you would buy it if it was entertaining enough, etc. I really am curious if anyone would be interested in purchasing such a video as I have never seen one done.

Thanks for your input and suggestions. I am open to hearing all of your ideas.

Keep in mind that this poll will be PUBLIC, which means that anyone will be able to see how you voted.

Thanks,

JoeyA
