8 Ball: 11 break/runs (3 were 8 balls on snap) on 6.5 foot bar box in Leesville, LA back in 1991, a challenge table at the "Hayride" nightclub in front of about 20 witnesses...cue was a 60 inch GEM (Gary Medlin) Szam copy. I've did an 8 pack that same year practicing on an 8 foot Gandy, also Leesville and ran a 9 pack on a 9 foot GCII in 1996 in Tacoma, Washington, also in practice, all with same cue (long since retired). Have run a few 4 and 5 packs in local tournaments with my Schon, but the past 15 years I've rarely run more than two in a row. Currently I average about 6 balls each rack before I get too far out of line on my pattern...
9 Ball: One 5 pack in a tournament in Monterey Ca in 1996 with my Schon, two short cuts and a 9 Ball break. Came back from 4-0 to win 4-5 in about 15 minutes. Never ran more than two before or since. 9 Ball was never my game...spent too much time playing 8 Ball, but there were more 9 Ball tournies than 8 Ball. Never gambled on it, and don't gamble at all any more.
14.1: 75 and out on a 9 foot Gandy in Leesville, LA in 1991...small bet ($20) against a much better player, gave me a 25 ball spot and after bunting around he patronized me a little and ticked me off...I've never run more than 30 since (don't play it much, mainly to practice constrained light touch control to help my 8 Ball game). 30 is kind of a mental block to me, I always seem to dog it in the third rack. I still play it to relax, work on touch, but never really applied myself to trying to beat my top run.
I got married in 1991, had my son in 1994 and haven't really played much since...did two years on the Planet Pool Tiger Tour in VA (2006-2007), but never practiced. Just showed up and played cold, to get the experience of a big tournament and match up against good players like Wilke, Davis, Putnam, Pookey, Slivka and others. Got smoked, as I deserved to, but had a lot of fun watching those guys play. Was always hoping to see Keith McCready come in and play and maybe play him just to say I did...even if I never got out of my chair! Never happened, though...
I'm over here in Cyprus for a couple of more years, playing my 16 year old son three times per week at a nice room with 9 foot pro-ams and trying to find my game again. It's realy frustrating to see and know what you're supposed to do, but not able to do it anymore. I'm slowly getting it back, though, and now my wife let's me out of the house more to take our son to play, it's all starting to come back. He's a real natural, and if I can keep him on the table until we lose him to college, I think I'll make a real player out of him...
