The Tao of Brumback: My Experience with a Champion

I spent last night with Mr. John Brumback, and I can honestly say it was one of the best pool experiences in my life. I have been to the Derby City Classic many times in the past few years. I have been to multiple professional events and gambling matches. This was one of the tops in my book.

I am an honest student of the game and do everything I can to learn the nuances that will make me a better player. All of us here know how hard this game is and that everything you learn gives you another weapon against your opponents. I have learned from many different players and have been to instructors for strategy and fundamentals. The information I received from John is as good, or better, than anything I have received before.

He has a way of relating information that makes it easy to understand. I have talked with many players of a professional caliber. I can’t tell you how many times it results in finding out that they can do something, but they don’t know how they did it. I have actually heard things like, “Just do it like this.”

Mr. Brumback has spent many years perfecting and deciphering the secrets of this game. He didn’t just learn how to perform, he learned the why behind the performance. The best part is that he understands how to relate this information to the learner. He is very relaxed at the table and has such a calming effect on the student. Even when I couldn’t make it work at first, he was patient and made me feel like I was going to get it. When I made the shot he was as excited as I was.

He really made me feel like I was learning and shooting pool with one of my good friends. I immediately felt at ease and was very comfortable. It was like I forgot I was in a lesson with a world class player and was getting the info at my home pool room. It’s incredible that a guy with that much talent on the table brings such a humility and humbleness to the lesson. I was blown away with his attitude and hospitality.

The information I received was of the highest caliber. I left excited and ready to put in some hard work at the table. In fact, I was so excited I woke up this morning and immediately went to the table to practice what he showed me.

John is a top level player in every discipline. I even heard he can bank a little :). Whether you are looking to be better at bank, rotation, one pocket, straight pool, John is the guy for you. If you can’t come away from a lesson with him feeling like you stole, you don’t need to play pool. The information he has is worth more than you can afford, and yet with what he charges, I felt like I should have wrote him an IOU for more.

Anyone looking to get better should contact John as soon as possible before his calendar fills up. His name on AZ is JBKY and his email address is jhbpool1@aol.com

Contact him soon, I promise you will not regret it.

It was definitely worth while and I hope more people do themselves a favor and give him a call.

You're right Lenny, on top of teaching and playing great, he's a hell of a guy.

Brandon;

That is a very thoughtful and well written explanation of your experience. It nice to see John get the credit he is due, and done in a fine manner. Kudos to John and you.

Not many people know this but John is also an excellent slots player.

He already has a serious stake horse with this discipline but you never know, you may be able to stake him at the slots when his main stake horse is busy with other business.

Thanks everyone for the good words! Brandon Is one of the best students That I have worked with.Mainly because I can see right away that he's going to put the time and hard work Into being a great player.
I finally had to say...Brandon,you have been here for hours upon hours
Im' getting tired,( It was late Into the night) and he just kept hitting ball after ball.I had to take my cueball away from him.lol Thanks again everybody and to you to Brandon! John B.

Just wanted to bump this so that John could get the exposure he deserves. If you're anywhere close, take advantage of his knowledge.

Good to know that champions are good people, which they usually are, but also that they are compensated for the decades of dedication to the game.

You must play for the love of the game. Any compensation that results from years of play is usually nominal. We need to work to change all that...

Gotta know what it is first before we can talk about change. I believe we need a set of players to represent pool in it's greatest form, then market them to people that can afford to dish out a few bucks. It's simple, just gotta round up the talent.

I think the talent already exists. It's the representation of that talent that lacks. That, and a refusal to organize in any meaningful way, despite recent efforts. Many a pool player seems content to rule their own small island, which consists primarily of ego. Rather than try to cooperate to expand the pie available to all, they'd rather fight over the table scraps.

But now this thread is about to get hijacked if this discussion persists.

Back on point, John Brumback is the tops.

Cheers...

I'd love to take advantage of a couple of hours with John, if he could ever spare some time at the Derby (like he did for JoeyA a couple of years ago). Just observing then was a pleasure, so I'm sure everything Brandon has to say is true. Those KY guys are all good in my book....Varner is 110% class as well!

John B.

I have known John since he was a kid and there's no nicer guy in pool. As has been said already, he doesn't just bank great, he KNOWS the game of bank pool. I have never heard of anyone taking a lesson from him that didn't get their money's worth and more.

Hey, John, how's that instructional DVD coming?:)
