Here are some stats from matches in the round-robin portion (group stage) of the 2017 World 14.1 Tournament played October 2-4 at Steinway Billiards in Queens, NY. These were 15 of the 17 matches streamed by AzBtv, and they represented 13.4% of the total of 112 round-robin matches that were scheduled for the event.

The conditions for this event include:
- 9-foot table with 4½" corner pockets and blue Andy Cloth;
- Aramith balls;
- triangle rack;
- fouls on all balls;
- opponent racks in some matches, rack your own in some matches;
- lag for opening break.

For similar results from the double- and single-elimination portions of this event, see this thread: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=461381

Attempted Scoring Innings means the player's total number of innings for the game minus the number of innings that he played only a safety or an intentional foul (no attempt to score a point).

PPI is Points per Inning based on the total number of innings in the game for that player. [Note: I am calling this measure Points per Inning rather than Balls per Inning to be a bit more precise in the definition, since the number of points a player is credited with in a game can be quite different from the number of balls he pocketed.]

PPASI is Points per Attempted Scoring Inning, i.e., points per inning based on the number of Attempted Scoring Innings in the game for that player.

Matches numbered 1-7 here were played on Monday, Oct. 2; Matches 8-12 on Tuesday, Oct.. 3 (I missed 2 streamed matches this day); and Matches 13-15 on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

All information is given first for the match winner and then for the match loser (separated by a comma). The numbers in parentheses in Matches #13 and #14 and #17 result from my not seeing a few shots while my stream was frozen. For calculations, I used the number not in parentheses.

Yes, terrific run. It looked like Jorge was going to go all the way out, but he missed a break shot. Then Hohmann got going again (ran 41) but missed on a slow swerve shot from bad position.

[The run was counted as 97; it may have been 96.]

I heard Darren Appleton ran 268 the other day. He won his match and continued until he missed. I don't know if the tournament awards separate prize money for the highest run. I'm curious what were the high runs for past years at this event. Would you have that information? If not, no worries, just curiosity.

A statistic that might be interesting, that I think you have the data for would be Percentage of innings a player plays a safety. It might be even in the published stats above in the thread. It would be interesting to see who the offensive players are vs the defensive, and if one strategy or another tends to come out winner.

Normally, for good reasons, players in these events do not continue after they have reached game points. But Darren ran 100 & out in his last match yesterday (Wednesday), decided to keep going, and reached 262. The match was not on the stream, so I cannot provide any details.

Whether they have a high-run prize this year, I do not know. But they have, at least sometimes, in the past. I think the money is contributed by beneficent fans rather than coming out of the general prize fund. Any points scored after reaching game points may not count for these prizes.

The highest runs I know about in recent years at the World 14.1 event are:

2016 -- Strickland, 135 & out vs. Schmidt in a quarterfinal match (to 200 points)

2015 -- Hohmann, 141 vs. Strickland in a quarterfinal match (to 200 points)

2014 -- Stalev, 151 & out vs. Davis in a double-elimination-round match (to 150 points). He then continued the run and reached 224.

2013 -- Appleton, 200 & out vs. Bustamante in a semifinal match (to 200 points).

2012 -- Reyes, 112 vs. Schmidt in the finals (to 200 points)

2011 -- Hohmann, 142 vs. Pagulayan in a semifinal match (to 200 points)

2010 -- Immonen, 135 vs. Daya in a quarterfinal match (to 200 points)

In the stats I posted above, the difference between Total Innings and Attempted Scoring Innings is the sum of safeties and intentional fouls, i.e., innings with no attempt to score a point.

For the 15 matches covered in post #1, those innings involving only a safety or an intentional foul were 43% of the match winners' innings and 43% of the match losers' innings.

As always, thank you for the stats .

Would be interesting to compare the stats from a full blown 14.1 tourney from long ago.

For example, 80 years ago the World Title championship that took place (this month) Oct 25 1937

Oh my god Schmidt v Harriman. That's worth the price of your ppv today right there. (Also not sure the picture of the nuclear explosion does it justice.)

Am I the only one that sees the clown head? Big round nose, wide smile, skinny neck with a bow tie...he even has the funny hair on the sides of his head. I hope I'm not the only one who sees that clown.

You could be over-reacting....or not....
