Here are some stats from the double- and single-elimination portions of the 2017 World 14.1 Tournament played October 5-8 at Steinway Billiards in Queens, NY. These were 12 of the 13 matches streamed by AZBtv on the main streaming table, and they represented 30.8% of the total of 39 matches played in those two portions of the event. [The 13th streamed match, was not watchable because of streaming problems.]

Matches numbered 1-3 here were in the double-elimination stage on Thurs. Oct. 5, and were played to 150 points. Matches 4-11 were in the single-elimination stage on Friday and Saturday October 6-7, and were played to 200 points. Match 12, the final match, was played on Sunday Oct. 8 to 300 points, with Lee Vann Corteza winning the championship.

The conditions for this event include:
- 9-foot table with 4 1/2" corner pockets and blue Andy cloth;
- Aramith balls;
- triangle rack;
- fouls on all balls;
- opponent racks in some matches, rack your own in some matches;
- lag for opening break.

Attempted Scoring Innings means the player's total number of innings for the game minus the number of innings that he played only a safety or an intentional foul (no attempt to score a point).

PPI is Points per Inning based on the total number of innings in the game for that player. [Note: I am calling this measure Points per Inning rather than Balls per Inning to be a bit more precise in the definition, since the number of points a player is credited with in a game can be quite different from the number of balls he pocketed.]

PPASI is Points per Attempted Scoring Inning, i.e., points per inning based on the number of Attempted Scoring Innings in the game for that player.

All information is given first for the match winner and then for the match loser (separated by a comma).

Lee Vann Corteza beat Thorsten Hohmann 300 - 183 in the final match of the 2017 World 14.1 event this afternoon. Here is how the game went, inning by inning.

Scores in brackets are for Corteza (C) first (since he shot the opening break), then Hohmann (H). References to "left" and "right" sides of the table are as the player looks from the head of the table to the foot.

C1 (Corteza's inning #1) -- opening safety break from left side, leaving the 1-ball out to the left side of the rack.
H1 -- started with the long 1-ball, ran 27, then missed an east shot on the 11-ball to the left foot pocket. [0 - 27]

C2 -- ran 8, then missed a long, slight left cut on the 13-ball to the right head pocket [8 - 27]
H2 -- ran 26, then missed a long shot on the 3-ball to the right foot pocket with the cue ball just off the center of the head rail. [8 - 53]

C3 -- ran 24, then missed a long cut on the 14-ball to the right head pocket. [32 - 53]
H3 -- ran 10, then missed a right cut on the 8-ball along the right side rail. [ 32 - 63]

C4 -- ran 46, then played safe. [78 - 63]
H4 -- played safe behind the rack

C5 -- missed a kick shot into the pack, trying for a combination on the 5-ball.
H5 -- ran 83 but left the last ball in the rack, then missed a long spot shot on the break ball on the head spot. [78 - 146]

C6 -- ran 29, then missed a short carom of the 8-ball off the 9-ball to the right foot pocket. [107 - 146]
H6 -- ran 2, then missed a thin backcut on the 10-ball to the right foot pocket. [107 - 148]

H7 -- ran 11, then missed a fairly easy shot on the 3-ball to the left foot pocket. [174 - 159]

That points per inning (formerly BPI) is actually quite high compared to the players of the 1960s to the 1980s. The record in the US Open 14.1 was by Mizerak at 18.66. I suppose that's partly due to shooting at everything.

Interesting. And one of those 7 games for Corteza (semifinal vs. Fulcher) was kind of an outlier. It went 26 innings, including 7 intentional fouls and 6 safeties. For the other 6 streamed games, Corteza's points per inning was 26.3

This was great. Right out of The Hustler!!!

I don't think Mizerak would have been hitting that shot, but this is new age, Filipino-style 14.1!!!

A bit more on that rather unusual game.

After about an hour and a quarter of play, and 17 innings for each player, the score was 8-3 Corteza. Fulcher had taken 3 fouls twice and Corteza (unintentionally) once. Plus, they had taken 9 additional intentional fouls. So they had pocketed 74 balls but had just 11 points.
 
Hohmann appeared in 6 streamed matches, producing the following aggregate stats (Corteza's stats in parentheses for comparison):

Do you know Sigel's average at the 1992 US Open at the Roosevelt?
