We are having our first UPA national event in June at http://mickeyscues.com/ and I am looking for a decent hotel close by. I have been to Vegas once before, but have not been of the main strip (that I can remember). The closest places I see online are Hampton Inn, La Quinta, and Doubletree. It's so hard to get a feel for the area, all of the online pics look good but....? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Also If It would be more advantageous to stay closer to the strip, how is the trolley system to that area(Mickey's)? Thanks in advance for your opinion:thumbup:

I could throw a rock from the TAR Studio and hit Mickeys so I am pretty familiar with the area. If you are looking for something close and a decent room I recommend the Hampton Inn here: http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/ho...d-suites-las-vegas-airport-LASETHX/index.html

I have put many a pro up there the last couple years. Its a nice clean place for a decent rate and its just down the street from Mickeys. The trolley system is nowhere near Mickeys or that part of town. I would rent a car. You can find deals if you look. Shane usually gets cars for $25-$30 a day when he is in town. It will cost you less than taxi's and you dont want to ride the bus in Vegas. That part of town is an area just off the airport with a big park in the middle of it. Its pretty safe but you do get the occasional homeless dude wandering around when they get booted out of the park so you do need to keep your eyes open.

I've stayed at the La Quinta many nights and will be again for the Bonus Ball playoffs. It's blocks from the arena. The La Quinta is good and has shuttle service hourly to the strip and airport. No complaints at all!

Yeaaaa… I'd rent a car for sure. I'd also stay at a hotel on Freemont Street rather than the Strip. That's just my opinion. I live in Las Vegas and the Strip is too crowded for me. Hotels are cheaper on Freemont Street and it's not too far from your destination. Don't rely on public transportation. Remember, this is MY opinion and I live here.

The hotels he asked about are all within a quarter-half mile of Mickeys.

Do not stay on Freemont Street. Hotels are cheaper for a reason. Hampton, Laquinta or any similar hotel will work well for someone not looking to party in casinos. If you are go to the strip. It costs more but the scenery is better and its safer.

listen to Justin and you'll be good to go and rent a car because one time it cost me a $20 taxi ($16 + tip) just from the airport to Mickey's (where I met a friend) which is 5 mins. away. Let us know when you come to Mickey's so some of us locals can meet up with you.

Ditto on the La Quinta. It is a newer hotel and very clean. They have a computer room and decent wifi, breakfast in the morning, good pool and hot tub. The shuttle service there is good and they are pretty cool about going other places for a few bucks.

I have stayed at the Double Tree at Pollack and Warm Springs probably 40 times and never had an issue.
Las Vegas was a territory of mine for work and I liked that side of town. I used Priceline probably 80% of my stays in Vegas and seemed to have good luck on that side.

If you have a car its not far and there is stuff in between if you need anything.

Very easy to and from the airport and you can be on 215 in an instant.

Decent to okay BBQ place in between the hotel and Eastern and the other way west from Hotel there is a hole in the wall Chicago pizza hot dog sandwich place that is good.

Oops, my bad. Then stay close to Mickey's! No brainer...

The Strip is too crowded and too expensive. Like I said, that's my opinion.

Everyone's entitled to my opinion. ;)

Before you book a hotel on the strip or downtown, I'd look at a map of Vegas. Mickey's Cues and Brews is located just Southeast of the airport. Long, long way from both the locations you mentioned. Listen to Justin!!!!

If you rent a car, be prepared for low rates but very high fees and taxes. Rent from a local office if possible. Just rented a car for a week from a Vegas Hertz Local Edition. Final price was one third of renting from the airport. Less convenient but much cheaper!

It's the same here where I live. You can rent a car from Avis at the Airport office and pay quite a bit more than if you rent the same type car from Avis at a Sears store. They are charging travelers more for the convenience of having the cars waiting when they get off the plane and it pays to shop around for a rental car if possible. I usually rent a car when I go to the US Open in the fall and I found this out after over paying a couple of times when I didn't price shop. There are a lot of web sites that help find the best deals now that I didn't know about or weren't around years ago when I first started renting cars for trips.

Do you know where Shane rents cars from?

And to the OP, in case you or your players didn't know, many times a renter's personal car insurance covers rental car insurance. Rental companies gouge a renter on insurance.

Be sure to check out hotwire and priceline for rentals as well.. Huge difference in pricing depending on what day you pickup, return date, time of year etc etc

I have been pretty lucky on rentals in the past going through Priceline. You choose size and can low ball the price to a number you know is below your just calling a local shop.

However if you deal off airport then you can actually get that location to cut deals directly. They don't have the car selection and the same great hours as an airport location but they are not a computer either. They can make deals

If you have AAA you can get a good discount at most all rental companies. The best discount comes with of all things a COSTCO membership.

Like someone else said be sure to check with your insurance company beforehand to make sure they cover it and what the coverage is.

Mickey's is at least five or six miles from the Luxor. Perhaps $15 to $20 each way cab ride may be more accurate.

The Luxor is a dive. One of the most run down hotels in Vegas and the upper lobby area which used to be awesome got renovated into a boring mess. The last time I was there the lower shopping area was 3/4 empty/vacant space and the other 1/4 of stores cheap gift store junk and fake and tacky worldly "artifacts".

That hotel still to this day has a lot of potential IMO if the right management came in and got to work on revitalizing it and finding the right things to do with their massive amount of space, but right now it is crap. The best thing about it right now is the fact you can walk along a concourse to Mandalay Bay which is an actual nice place with awesome shopping and restaurants.
