I would rate Playing Off the Rail as the best pool book ever written, followed by Running the Table. Both very well written. Pool Wars is also a great read.

The original novel version of The Color of Money is quite different from the movie. Anything by Byrne and Dyer. See if you can get your hands on John Grissim's Billiards; Hustlers & Heroes, legend and lies, and the search for higher truth on the green felt. He has a blurb about taking refuge in a manila pool hall during a tear gas street riot, and discovering how well a local kid name Efren Reyes played.

Sweet is an overlooked gem. Heather Byer's narrative taking in a pool school at Chelsea billiards so she can learn how to play, plunged her into the world of bar league pool.
