League Pool

If your bored with league play then may I recommend playing this Saturday at the Nitehawk tournament in Portland, OR. There will be some good players there. It only costs around 50.00 to enter and you can see how well you actually play. Of course there should be some gambling available there also.

Been there, done that. However I have been sober for 15 years and don't miss it a bit.

I'm playing league again now for the first time in 14 years & I love it! It's a fun night out with some competetive pool & a few beers! I also enjoy tournaments, basically any kind of pool that pits you against different players from week to week, all trying to win.

Once the game starts then it's all business for me, but that's what makes it fun. I think last week's match was the first time in ages when I felt totally focused on the game, that great feeling you get when the world goes away & it's just you & the table.

I love it. Now, if I can just play without hopping this week!!:D

This is the same format that the APA uses for their U.S. Amateur Championship. 8 ball and 9 ball are quite different games and they require different skills. The winner of this format is definitely the better all around player.

Concerning the fact that you hate playing in the league, all I can say is that you have discovered that you like gambling more than you like playing pool.

Not really because I love billiards in general. I just started learning 3 cushion and think it's great.

I guess I just like the heart that's involved when gambling is involved, I believe that you take more from the person then just there money when you win. And something hurts more for me then just whats at stake monetarily, call it pride I guess.
Mack, I'm sorry to say you have things a little backwards.

You obviously like to play to win money, through gambling. You have even admitted you play others, of lesser skill, take their money and that makes you feel good. IMHO, that isn't even gambling.

If you liked the "the heart that's involved" and the "pride", you would like playing in the APA league, because, in the league, it is all heart and pride.

So you don't like to gamble unless you got the Nuts. That ain't gambling. That's Robbing. :)

This is not true, I have gambled with some of the best pro-am and pro players on the west coast... AND LOST!

I have never tried to get the nuts in form of weight or anything. Hell sometimes when I'm done playing pool I see if they just want to flip quarters heads or tails for $5-10 buck a flip. I would say even this if pretty close to even.

But back to gambling in pool, I can honestly say I have never robbed anyone.
Or taken advantage of a lesser player that wants to gamble. Where is heart in getting the nuts? What have I really gained if I win having the nuts? NOTHING!

There is alot of things my pool game is lacking, but people who have played me will vouch it's not heart.

PS... I hate league  I think the use league as more of an excuse to get hammered and not take it serious route might be for me! Please note, i'm not bashing "league players" but it's just not for me I guess.

I's this a weekly tournament? I think my friend Todd Gooch was telling me about this. I would love to come up and play, please dont take my willingness to gamble as that i'm some kind of Jam up player. I'm not a banger either, but just like a little gamble.

Please show me exactly where I said I gamble with players of lesser skill and take there money? I never said this, because I never have!

If you are refering to this "Because sometimes I do like to play for nothing. But thats mainly just when the person im playing with is better then me or pretty even. Or to show somebody there not better then me."

Then please note the "sometimes I do like to play for nothing"

Thanks, Mack

Just curious, who did you gamble with and for how much? I think I remember you when you played at Hard Times.

No, I'm not kidding.

Maybe it is not that way for you and your league, but it is that way for me and my league. I go every week and try my best to win my match. I am not a world beater, but I do alright. I know I'm not going to get a great return on my money from the APA. I play for the pride of winning and I think I play with a lot of heart. I can say the same for most people in my league.

BTW, don't take my comments as being from someone who has never gambled on pool. I have gambled my share, and then some. I can honestly say, I did quite well gambling, but gambling made it too much like a job and it wasn't fun.
In recent years, I have decided to play pool for the love of the game and not for gambling. I play in an APA league and I play in some small tournaments, but I do not gamble any more. That doesn't mean I play with any less enthusiasm or heart.

I'm not in any league. My own league experience, such as it is, has been with in-house leagues. I've played in three, set up and run one of them. My experience with all three was very positive, for the most part. I may tell, later, of one of my best friends at the time, bringing in a ringer into the largest one, 32 players, but I digress. Sadly, my references to league play are what I've seen in this area over the past 9 years. I'm not prepared to get into just what it is that has soured me on leagues in general and apa specifically, at this time. That may change, as there are now two threads about league play. I have good friends, that I consider serious or at least semi-serious, players who have been involved in leagues, but these people weren't the ones who soured me. I went to a bunch of league events with these friends. Their play, attitudes, and actions at and away from the table made me proud to know them. Not so, of others, WAY too many, whose obvious lack of character, knowledge, do-anything-to-win attitudes were worse than some of the hustling weasels I've seen, and I've seen more than a few. They just don't care. But I'm starting to go off, so I'll quit, for a bit, at least.

If only... his beard/goatee/hippie-hedge is definitely memorable, though, and, if this is the Mack I remember, he was playing in the Hard Times B & C player tournament. I only saw him that one time, I think, and I can't really place exactly when.

I didn't connect the face with the name until he put a picture of himself as the avatar for "stolz2". I also remember in one of his first posts that he said he could string racks and couldn't find a practice partner at Hard Times.

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showpost.php?p=97444&postcount=1

I was just curious if he ended up finding some good practice and how much the going rate for batting balls around with professionals and semi-professionals was. You know, in case I decide to fire a water pistol or two at those Hard Times monsters. ;)

Dave where on a internet forum, you never see posts get interpreted differently?

Thats why I said show me my quote and re-posted it what I had said.

And then clarified the way I gamble.

I have never robbed anyone and dont look to play lesser players when I gamble, unless they want weight and I think its a fair challenge.

And this is getting off topic, I wanted other peoples views on the apa. Specifically anyone that is not fond of leauge play.

I also want to say that when playing leauge, I have never *****ed or voiced my thoughts about league.

Or ever asked someone to gamble during league play or right after.
I play I smile and dont want to ruin peoples night that due enjoy it.

Send me a picture, maybe I will remember you by face.

You know it really depends, because most pro's can hardly pay rent if they play full time. Makes pool a great sport in the united to states for players like my self to be able to play with pro's. One of my best friends drew efren in the 1st sunday of the month at HT's .....that was cool.
As for what it cost really depends, I have never lost more then a 1k in a fairly lengthy set. As for the players. Mainly the ones that are at HT alot, King Kong, The mexican jumping bean. in Sactown Amar Kang, Joey G. There is more, but mainly the semi regulars. And a few notibles from the North West area. I will add a few more to my belt come next year at the DCC, just gotta get a litte bank roll up that i'm willing to lose..

I almost got to watch Sam M from On cue in san diego play Ismael Paez 10 ahead for 5k, but I was moving the next day back to Oregon :(

So I was asked to play on a masters apa league by some one im doing business with, so I kinda felt obligated.

And I just have to vent and say that I hate it. It's some weird format where you play 8 game of 9 ball and then switch to 8 ball or vise versa. And who ever gets the majority of the games wins.

Am I gambling too much? Because this APA thing is just really boring, even when I win, I feel like I have lost because there is no $$$ involved. Except the $10 + 75 cents a game... :(

And even when someone beats me, I feel like asking them to gamble. Does anyone else feel this way? If I had not given my word, I would quite. I dont want to run around giving everyone high fives when I win either.

Sorry I just had to vent and say league is not fior me.

-MS

In my opinion league is not for you. Just my opinion.

Good luck on the picture for OMGWTF is very shy with pictures of herself. If on the otherhand you should be blessed by one, please share - there are alot of posters that are in wonder.

I wonder if she will be at the WPBA tourney at the Viejas Casino this week?
