1st place paid around $147,000 USD. Not a bad payday. The best would be hard pressed to make that in an entire year playing pool.

Perhaps one day but probably not any time soon.

The payout was quite top heavy -- 1st was 3 1/3 times as much as 2nd; 4th was just 5% of 1st. Here's are the prizes as posted in another thread by Joe Jaguar: https://forums.azbilliards.com/showpost.php?p=6312371&postcount=37 Converting that to US dollars using a conversion rate of .147, we have:

1st -- $147,000
2nd -- 44,000
3rd -- 14,700
4th -- 7,350
5th/6th -- 4,400
7th/8th -- 3,675
9th/12th -- 2,205
13th/16th -- 1,470
17th/24th -- 735
25th/32nd -- 441
33rd/48th -- 294
49th/64th -- 221

yep

Yes - this looks to be the future of pool, as they have reputable referee's who know the rules and how to enforce them. A very classy venue with prize $ good enough to schedule travel plans a year in advance. Where there are not players having to rack for themselves - there will be talent, prestige, and cash.

Hardly saw anyone in the audience on some of the matches. Not even 25 people. Maybe they show it on tv there.

Anybody know where the money comes from?

Even successful sports must have a sustainable source of funding.

Right now there are big changes being called for in pro cycling, relating to this very need. Currently, teams have sponsors that are on 1 to 5 year agreements. Thus, there is a constant scramble to keep the athletes on current teams.

At 5- 40m a year, not too many players in that game.

It’s the same way with Kingfish tournaments down here. After third place you’re lucky to make a couple of bucks after expenses. And taxes since they pop you with a W2 on the spot. And that’s with 500 boats entered. I wish they would spread it out thru the top twenty.

But not all of the big Chinese pool tournaments are that top heavy. Here, for example, is the distribution for the China Billiard World Championship when Appleton won it a few years ago. The total prize fund was similar to the one for this past week's Masters event: /www.azbilliards.com/tours_and_events/314-china-billiard-world-championships/6527-de-er-le-cup-china-billiard-world-championship-2015-mens-division/results/
