I did a search and was unable to find anything on stance.

Stance for me is a BIG struggle for two years. I have tried several and can not get confortable. I am open to any suggestions from ball bangers to pros. If this subject has been posted in depth, please post a link to the information.

If there are websits, videos, ect...that helped you and you think it could help me (others) let us know.

thanks for your time,

Stance DVD

Check out Bert Kinisters DVD " The Stance of the Worlds Top Shot Shotmakers...Vol 70". It shows in depth the correct stance used by top snooker players...a very tough game where you really need to be in line with your shots. You won't be sorry. Try ebay or a search on the internet for the DVD.

There is a lot of good information on getting into your stance, check out the intro section in Phil Capelle's books. I would like to add two things: if its not working for you, move around and change things, be willing to experiment, until you find something that works. Also, your stroke is a large part of your stance. When you are experimenting, don't only shift your feet and body weight, but also move where your body is relative to the cue and your stroking arm, moving it closer or farther away from your body.

Thanks all.

Thank you everyone who posted,

Sorry for the delay. I gave many of you rep "points", hopefully I did it correctly, my first time.

I adjusted my christmas list for many of the suggestions here.

Neil: You hit the nail on the head. My stroke is "one piece". My stance is connected to my stroke, connected to my aim, connected to my speed and success. Once my stance to corrected I expect great things. I wish I could just plop down on the line. Maybe, I think about it to much.

I attempted lessons from different instructors, and was told many different things. A successful player/coach told me "don't worry about it." Maybe he is right. I tried, and can't stop thinking about it. I am going to start from the beginning and see what happens. I am determined to solve this problem, with all my pool resources/time. This information is the right beginning.

The biggest struggle people often have is trying to take on a stance their body just can't accept. Maybe they see a favorite pro standing that way and emulate that stance, but body types often decide the correct stance above what textbooks say.

All you have to do is look at Earl Strickland or Keith McCready to know that comfort is the most important ingredient to success, not appearance. If you have a textbook perfect stance but you're twisted up like a pretzel, you won't be able to play with confidence. Pain can also develop.

Next time you're at the table, get your upper body into alignment with the cue set where you see center. Bend over and just let your feet go where they want to go in order to keep balanced and free of tension. Relax your knees and you'll really see where the balance is. Good luck.

Good point,

That has been part of my struggle. textbook verses "what feels good." I alway thought textbook was the best, I have been wrong in the past.

Of course it's most important to have a comfortable stance that works for you, but that doesn't mean you should make up something from scratch. The "standard" stance is the standard for a reason, and it's worthwhile to learn it and use it if it's comfortable for you.

But the devil's in the details, and it's important to have the details of your stance fine tuned for you. So rather than letting the pre-shot routine (the steps and motions you use to get into your stance) dictate all the details of your stance for you, spend some time trying variations to find your optimum combination.

The main details you might want to vary are the positions of your feet, hips, shoulders, head, elbow and bridge arm. The goal is a still, comfortable stance naturally conducive to an effortless straight stroke in line with your sight.

Try some unstructured shooting, letting your stance adjust itself and just concentrating on making balls and getting position. When you're feeling comfortable and accurate, notice if your feet/hips are more "open" or "closed" than usual, if your elbow is closer or farther from your body, if your head and shoulders are at their usual angles to the shot. It might be worth incorporating one or more of these changes into your "standard" stance (and pre-shot routine).
