Could our Mosconi cup team beat our "B" Team

Watching the play the last two days, its hard for me to believe that our current team would be favored over the following team (in the same Mosconi format):

1. Earl Strickland
2. Rodney Morris
3. Donny Mills
4. Justin Hall
5. Justin Bergman

Easy to second guess the makeup of this team considering their underachieving performances the last 2 days. However, the players on this team are deserving, proven players. Woodward and Thorpe are two of the most talented young players we've had in many years. They have dominated many of the tournaments they've played in - including I would guess a winning match record this past year over the 5 players you mention. And how anyone could consider leaving SVB off of this team, easily the best American player over the past decade, is laughable.

There's a fun fantasy US team you can make by just picking the top 5 players with the most appearances at the Mosconi Cup:

  1. Johnny Archer
  2. Earl Strickland
  3. Rodney Morris
  4. Shane Van Boening
  5. Corey Deuel

Seems like a pretty sporty team even now. However the selection is no longer based on just the promoter's picks, we have actual ranking points and such. Interestingly on the European side Ralph Souquet would still be on such a fantasy team, he's #1:

  1. Ralf Souquet
  2. Mika Immonen
  3. Niels Feijen
  4. Steve Davis
  5. Oliver Ortmann

Maybe we need a "Mosconi Classic" event as I'd enjoy watching these two teams face off.

Have you seen US vs Russia Mosconi-cup-format?
US barely won. And none of the Russian players made it to EU team.
Go figure.

I wasn't second guessing the picks... or saying Shane shouldn't be on the team. I was just saying that I'm not sure they would be favored over the next 5 guys on the list.

I dont think any one can deny Shane is our best player. With that said I dont see why any one is surprised that we continually lose in the mosconi cup year after year when our best player can only muster up a 10-15 record in singles under this format.

Noted, but 4 of those 5 players you mentioned have been on our team in recent years, and we've not done any better. All the top Euro players seem to have textbook snooker stances, alignment, and strokes, whereas US players are all different in those aspects. Proof that solid fundamentals hold up under pressure.

There may be some truth in the "old gang" (Earl,Archer, Rodney etc) doing better than the revamped younger team under Wilson from 2014

2007-2013
USA 50 points scored total
Means average score is Europe 11-7

2014-2016
USA 15 points scored total
Means average score is Europe 11-5

As they say , that about sums it up in a nutshell

This really is extremely evident, I couldn't agree more. Fundamentals matter!

I honestly almost think I could put together a team that would take the Mosconi down of regional stone cold killers. They NEVER feel or fade any pressure AND THEY ALWAYS GET OUT FOR THE CASH! Overall maybe not the speed of this team BUT good enough to beat anyone in the world a race to 5. Shortstops maybe but really at least low level pros. The difference is they have heart all day, don't care about nothing other than getting the cash ( Mosconi trophy ) and ain't scared of nonody. Broom breaks must be allowed 😊

The old gang were playing in a more pool friendly environment in America than the young crowd has. You actually had a decent chance of a non pool player knowing who Earl Strickland was.

Gas was cheap.. Only the higher end hotels cost $100.00 a night, as opposed to today, where EVERY hotel costs minimum $100.00 a night.

Regional tournaments every weekend, and multiple within 100-200 miles of each other. These days, you get a decent regional tournament MAYBE once a month, and you have to drive a ways for that.

The younger players can't be total killers, at least against this level of competition, without constant exposure to decently tough tournaments.

This isn’t our top 5 players and if you think different you can stake any 5 you want and I’ll let you win a lot of money.

I only watched Hatch/Thorpe match today. They sure squeaked that win, but had missed chances to close it sooner. Which pair do you think play best together on Team USA ? Thx.

I think they should include the Chinese or the Philippines in the Mosconi cup to play the Euros because it's very evident America has NO Chance. Embarrassing !!![.................QUOTE=The-Professor;6033802]I wasn't second guessing the picks... or saying Shane shouldn't be on the team. You might want to look at a world map if you think Russia is in Europe

pretty much any classification anywhere in the world Counts Russia as European Nation....
traditionally the Europe extends to the river Volga that goes down from the Ural mountains to the Black Sea....that would leave the most populated Centers of Russia on European side...Moscow to start with...
