Thoughts on The Hustler and Color of Money books?

The hustler movie by far the best ever pool movie.look at the big time stars in it too. Straight pool the best game ever to play or learn .Now it's like a dinosaur. God memories never die but time runs out.God bless you all. God bless my great friend Irving Crane .World Champion and gentleman. Rich

As I recall TCOM book is completely different than the movie and TH movie somewhat different than the book. Both books are better than the movies and are must reads for everyone on this forum.
Do you think the attentiveness paid to a novel on pool helped your game?

Anybody seen the Netflix limited series "The Queens Gambit?"
That was written by Tevis too.
Anyhow I have read both books and they were great.
I have seen The Hustler and TCOM many many times.
They are still the best pool movies out there.
The Hustler outshines all of the other pool movies by far in every aspect of the game and in life.
The Hustler movie is just on an entirely different level.

Someone mentioned that both movies spurred a pool craze which they did.
My son is building a house and the basement is finished for a poolroom.
It was a priority for my son with 10 foot ceiling in the finished basement and
he just ordered a new 9 foot Diamond as he is about month away from settlement.
He ordered it from a dealer/mechanic out of Maryland who is incredibly busy as I believe all mechanics are right now.
This dealer/mechanic is sure that we are currently going through another pool Renaissance
and he has been in the business for a couple of decades.

For anyone who has not read the book the color of money it really is a must read because it’s a completely different story line then the movie

For me I think you could debate whether the hustler was a pool movie or a drama that had pool in it
jmho

I agree, I was born in 1963 the year it came out. But I think the COM book is just as well written by Tevish and if Scorsese had actually followed his book it would be ranked with the Hustler, a classic. The pictures of Vince and Carmen on the cover are absurd, neither character was even in the book.

I wonder how two books by the same author produced such different movies. Is it just the wildly different leads - Newman the actor vs. Cruise the face?

I believe the producers/directors are responsible for it. The Hustler mostly followed the authors storyline, I don't know what Scorsese was thinking about. A payday I guess.

The producers/directors are responsible. Walter Tevish wrote two great books about pool. Scorsese just made a payday there. TCOM could have been a classic also right up with the Hustler. Sad really.
