Looks like you are getting your pool movie....

A movie plot involving playing on the road and hustling, like Cornbread Red and other colorful characters in pool lore, would have been appealing. I always thought that a film about a military vet coming home after WWII or Vietnam with PTSD Issues finds solace and a small measure of normalcy in playing pool. The storyline involves meeting some other disabled vets recovering in a hospital. The main character is withdrawn and isolates himself from contact with others. Basically he has withdrawn into his own shell until one day he sees a fellow vet trying to play pool in the rec room. He watches him struggle and sees his frustration on being clumsy because of his disability but he relentlessly keeps trying.

The other vet has lost use of his legs so playing pool is a challenge. Before the war, he had aspiration and the talent to be a world champion. He still has the aspirations to compete but knows his limitations and accepts his fate in life until he meets ….uh ….Juan…….the main character. The two grow close and they get to play pool every day where Juan gets to be taught the game and actually has the aptitude and skills to be a good player. And it allows him to block out the memories that haunt him and find kinship in the bond that forms between these two vets. As Juan starts to master the game after many hours of instruction every day, he learns that playing pool is his sanctuary that lets him block out the demons that still haunt him after the war.

Then one they decide it’s time to push their boundaries and venture outside the Veteran Hospital. They decide to go on a road trip to visit Juan’s family in California. But they’re in Boston and don’t have the plane fare…..so they decide it’s time for a Hustler’s road trip across America…….and along the way, they encounter a cast of colorful characters in different pool halls and cities as they try to win enough money to complete the trip to see Juan’s family.

Maybe it’s time for a story about everyday people, pool and everyday life where one balances your finances, relationships and dedication to the game in pursuit of the Golden Fleece…….The U.S. Open Championship. Whatever the theme is for a new film, just strive to avoid rehashing what’s already been attempted.

On The Hill
Short script
5/8/2025

I will go with a story that takes place in modern day times.

A lonely used car salesperson is bored with life after the divorce. He meets a gal at a bar that he frequents everyday after work. He plays her a game of pool and she whips his ass everyday. To get her to like him, he practices pool everyday at another bar. One day he meets her at the bar again and beats her and she is impressed. A few drinks later they hit it off and they back to her place.

<sex scene>

Scene starts at the bar....he's sitting their drinking while waiting for her. Struggling to pay the bills he finds an opportunity to make some money after meeting an old timer there. (old timer is to be played by Efren Reyes, famous in the pool world but not a household name) The old timer says, "Have you ever thought of hustling?" He says, "No I haven't thought about it." He takes him to the back and shows him a flyer. The flyer says sign up "Everyone can play....Anyone can win....sign up with your local APA."

He takes up the offer with the old man and they sign up for APA league. Plays a session and does well. Old man seems to be disappointed in how well our main character is beating everyone's ass. The old man says the art of sandbagging is lost and teaches him the hustle.

He eventually makes it to Las Vegas and wins the APA tournament. After returning from Vegas he drives up to the bar in a new Mercedes and meets the gal that introduced him to pool. They both talked and she asked him where he's been. The movie ends with league players arriving for league night and taking selfies with him . She looks at him and sees a gold winner's bracelet and smiles. He smiles. The credits comes on.

a flick loosely based flick on st louie roberts (warts and all) with an accurate depiction of his life and ultimate early death would be riveting

the young man that played elvis a couple of years ago is my first choice to play the lead

there is a thread about a st louis louis movie, i think it's a very low budget thing.

anyway. the tournament scene in any sport doesn't offer much movie script material. but can the current action scene in the USA credibly be described as vibrant or interesting? post-internet, post-fargorate..

The fact that they keep making movies should provide us some modicum of reassurance. To me, how often we see pool/poolrooms in TV commercials provides a lot -- the folks that make those 30 second spots really know what drives the American public. A weekly TV show, either a comedy a la Chuck Lorre or a drama a la David Chase or David Simon, would really put us on the map.

Every pool movie since The Color Of Money was a bad movie... Pool Hall Junkies was supposed to be the big next thing, and although it was fun to watch, it wasn't a good film (except for the lion speech).
The success of the Hustler and COM is that they are based on good books and they are about the people and not pool; you could have changed pool to golf or chess or whatever, and they would still be good movies. Forget about the actors' names; they need a good script.

He's 81 and just had a baby. I think he's too busy to play a "pool hustler" because wasn't he one in all his other movies.? LOL

I have no opinion on how you spend your money. I am just surprised of your hurt feelings.
You can keep saying my feelings are hurt all you want, doesn't make it true.

You're free to give people who hate you all the $$$ you want(notice I'm not worried about how you spend your $) but I won't, this isn't difficult to understand for normal people

So who do you want in the role, Woody Allen?
It's none of my business who they cast, why are you all so worried about why I won't watch this movie? None of you have your own lives?

Didn't that guy have sex with his adopted daughter and marry her or some crap like that?

The Lion speech was the worst part of the movie

Never underestimate the power of denial.

There are a lot more BAD movies made than GOOD ones. Let's wait for the movie to come out before we start our critical analyses of an unmade movie. I for one want anything pool out there hopefully promoting our game.

To be honest studios bank on consumers like you.

They want people to line up when the movie premieres. I don't think you would normally wait in line for a movie but I believe you will for this one since you are a pool player.

You published your opinion on a public forum, no body asked you to state that you wouldn't watch you volunteered it and that opned it up for speculation.

And I wasn't suggesting the creep Woody Allen, just thought his political views might match yours since he's are the polar opposite of DeNiro's.
