me. at any game for any amount, if i like the bet, and feel i have the best of it.

anyone that bets any other way is a fool. and a fool and his money will soon part as the accurate saying goes.

Both are made for gambling.

My grandpa taught me to gamble at both golf and pool when I was 10.

Only pennies and nickels, but it was a lesson well learned...

i grew up feeling if something wasn't on the line, meaning reward for good and pain for bad it want a contest. and wasn't worth putting all your effort into it.
as the result was meaningless. except for ego satisfaction. whatever that is for some.

Fun little backstory...

My Grandpa ran a small Brewery in Appleton, Wisconsin.

At 10, I worked part time that summer sweeping up around the brewery.

Across the street was a small tavern owned by Bob and Ellen Bleier, parents of Rocky Bleier, of Pittsburg Steelers fame.

After work, to my mother's great distress, grandpa would take me over to Bliers and we'd play a few games of pool and have a beer. Back then, if your grandpa said it was ok, they'd give you "a little beer for a little guy"...

That was the first place I ever shot pool and drank a beer in a bar. You don't forget memories like that!

Pool is head to head competition .Golf you and your opponent could compete on different days. In fact you would never even have to meet each other, just have someone tell you who won.
It is not head to head in the same manner as tennis or boxing, both of which all contestents are on the playing field at the same time.

If you don't think pool is harder than golf, try coming through the losers bracket in a 128 person two day tournament. Try playing for your cash against an equal player for 12 plus hours or more. If you watch closely, whether you play both games or not, you can see the difference between the top players in each sport vs good players. Sub 800 Fargo players seldom win the U.S Open just like in golf when you're not in the top 25 rated golfers winning a major. To me its equally difficult...........Pick your poison when you're 14 years old. This thread belongs in, "The To Be Continued Department."

most golf is head to head in a foursome. and you are playing against each other hole by hole. the score board is just the tally of who is winning at that point. sure tournaments may not be but usually at the last day the finalists are playing together or close to it.

same as in a pool tournament.

take cole. he went from a kid shooting pool to strong player in two years. my guess on about that. in golf he went from a hacker to shooting in the 70's in two summers of play.

friend was a very skilled soccer player and just took up golf and never had played. and got to shoot near par in two years. now is a zero handicap.

?????????
What is the defensive play in golf? No matter what, in golf you get credit for your performance. Your opponent has no effect. In boxing, tennis and pool, your opponent can beat your brains out.

Golf is not like pool and neither is like boxing or tennis where you must enter the playing arena and physically defend against your opponent in real time.

Can anyone help me explain this please? Seems like a simple concept to me but maybe not?

Have you read this thread? The original point was that the two sports are not comparable. They are entirely different activities performed in a different way.
No golf is not like pool that was the whole original point. To respond to a post you have to have context.

You are the one who compared both of them to Tennis and Boxing here. That was the context. Nothing more nothing less. I have read the entire thread and fully understand the subject as it has been discussed many times before. Golf is closer to pool than pool is to boxing. By miles.

I will end this right here because my instinct is to get personal and I don't want to.

Them??? I'm sorry just go back and read post number 11. If you can't figure it out and that's okay, it's not meant to be a test.

I've played golf for close to 60 years. My best guess would be over 2 thousand rounds. I don't think I played more than 5 by myself.

With the exception of the relative few represented by stroke play tournaments, virtually every one of them were directly competing against one or more or their individuals.

I've played a lot more pool "competing" against myself, either playing the ghost or 14-1, than I ever did golf.

Just sayin'...
The golf course is the ghost equivalent you are looking for / playing against.

Bobby Jones famously played against the course, frequently referring to his true opponent as "Old Man Par," rather than focusing on his human adversaries . By concentrating on his own game and minimizing mental errors , he dominated both amateurs and professionals, famously winning the Grand Slam in 1930 before retiring at 28.
