I like your response to “bar tables.” And I agree that exposure to the game is paramount to maintain popularity. Those “bar tables” have indeed accomplished much of that.

I'm 79 and still play every day and love it as much as ever. I win a tournament every once in a while. Keep on. Yep, the younger players could learn a lot but did you listen that well when you were younger. Probably not. Human nature, I guess.
