You can remove one ball at a time from the machine or pull out the top and have access to all the balls at once. Also you can run it with any number of balls, doesn't need to be fully loaded.

The cleaning pads go for $20 shipped for a set of 16, with normal home use they probably won't need to be replaced for a 2-3 years or more. The pads are 3/4" self adhesive Velcro loop material that you can also buy at fabric stores or online places like Amazon, you'd need about 10 feet for a 16...

Currently only have natural birch with a clear UV topcoat. Never tried it but according to Google you can paint over the UV finish if properly prepared (a scuff sanding and a good primer).
