I believe some of the slow play is gamesmanship, keeping opponent seated as long as possible. I've seen many slow, deliberate players play fast while practicing and they play just as well.

At 66, retired and with a table at home, I probably play maybe 2 hrs a day at most. The closest pool room is 2+ hrs away. About once or twice a month a friend and I will play about a 6 hr session. I still believe I'm improving, although at small increments. Just to keep in stroke an hr a day...
