    Perimeter vs Lite Systems

I'm thinking the same things you are - I'm just a few months behind you (I've not bought the light yet, but it's looking like I'm likely to get one as my wife objects to the 'traditional' hanging pool light, because it interferes with playing ping-pong when we put on the ping-pong top we also...

Defy shaft with Navigator Soft tip

I figure it’s simple “up selling” another of their own products. It cleans! It lubricates! … and they control the formula and avoid something that harms the finish. Abrasives, solvents, flavorings… the usual.

Defy shaft with Navigator Soft tip

I've eventually gotten around to this: Attached (hopefully) is an audio file which compares the sound of a few cues: Action Break/Jump Cue - Samsara Jump/Break tip Action Table Set Cue: Ultraskin Fire Soft tip McDermott G-Core: Navigator Black Medium tip. McDermott Defy: Navigator Automatic...

    Let's talk chalk

I tried different chalks for fun; but I agree 100% — were my chalk to vanish somehow, I would buy the cleanest chalks for the money.

    Let's talk chalk

I’ve bought and tried just about every chalk PoolDawg sells. I really can’t see/feel much difference in how they play. The differences as far as I’ve seen are: * Residue on the Table * Residue on the Cue ball (cling) * The feel during application * How well it covers * How long it stays on...

Wood vs. Carbon Fiber cue ball squirt (with a twist)

I just received an email from PoolDawg: They're now selling a solid Carbon Fiber shaft. It seems we won't have to guess any more. ... Now check the date.

    Best cheap digital caliper

I’ve never had that happen to me, but can definitely agree it would be annoying. Are you sure you haven’t angered some sort of pool God and wound up cursed? You get bonus points if you had a set of vernier calipers reset mid measurement! If that happened, you’re definitely cursed!

    Best cheap digital caliper

My 2¢: I have a nice set of Mitutoyo calipers, Micrometer, and a set of good Gage blocks. I compared the measurements from the Mitutoyo calipers and micrometer against a couple sets of Harbor Freight Calipers, using the gage blocks as a standard. All of the tools were completely within their...

    Opinions on personal protection

My brother’s a dentist. His occupational hazard is the stuff his patients spew out of their mouths at him — and that was before 2020. He put it to me this way: Masks protect the wearer from disease the same way diapers protects a baby if it crawls over another baby’s poop smear. They don’t...

    Pin die 3/8-10

I’m pretty sure it’s for cutting threads into a hard rod of some sort - plastics, aluminum, brass, unhardened steel, and possibly some kinds of wood, provided there’s actually a wood that dense. I imagine I could turn out a joint protector out of Acetyl rod, and use this die to cut threads into...

Defy shaft with Navigator Soft tip

I have a 12mm Defy shaft. I ordered mine from McDermott and they put on any Navigator tip at no charge (you know... other than the fact they charge more to begin with). I went with a Medium. As I said in my review of the Defy shaft: it’s important to understand what the SMACwrap in the Defy...

    Refinish A Carbon Fiber Butt

I love start with: I’m not a cue maker. I do know a fair bit about painting modern composites, though. An auto body or (better) custom auto body shop has the equipment, experience, and materials to do the job properly and give a professional result. They may not be a cue smith, but they do...

History question: mixing mm and inches

So it doesn’t surprise me to see both the Metric and US Customary Systems, since it’s a global game with a long history. It does, however, surprise me to see most US cues using mostly US measurements - oz. inches, etc. Except for the tip diameter, which is in mm. Is measuring tips in mm a...

    Milk dud experiments...

I hear you, but pressure isn’t the only thing that’s removing the liquid — especially at 20% relative humidity. The tips start out dry, obviously. I have been weighing them after pressing, but before air drying, and there is probably 50 mg of water that evaporates after I remove the tip from...

    Opinions on personal protection

I don’t doubt it — fiberglass isn’t oily, it’s not really porous, it doesn’t warp... and they manufacture it specifically so stuff bonds well to it. If the things I hear about cocobolo sawdust are remotely true, the itching of fiberglass just isn’t much to complain about in comparison.
