Annual check-in, a little early this year. Hi to everyone I knew in the day who are still hanging in there! Does anyone know how and where David "The Hamster" Malone might be these days? TIA! -- Larry (Larson)

Hmmm -- that's me at the extreme right. Hi, Lou! Still hanging in there, though with 12 posts in 15 years, you'd never know it! Oh, and hi to Jam, Eric, Ron, Pat, Deno and any of the old RSB crew who might hang out here. Yes, I came originally from NJ (Miz country), and then lived for 30...

    Pool Novel

You can't create valid sentences by joining two simple sentences with a comma (at least not in English). Those bad examples are called "run-on sentences". His narrative is creative, but he needs a copy editor who is a strong grammarian.

Well, here we go again! 8;) That's not how things worked, Jam. The only delay due to your being on a dial-up modem was in getting what you typed up the line to your service provider, which took seconds -- even with the earliest 300 baud modems. Sorry! -- Larry

Hi Jam, Mike Page, Patrick Johnson, Lou Figueroa, Bob Jewett, and anyone else I missed! I was around from the first weeks of Usenet onward, first as m14430@mwvm.mitre.org (Dexter Medley was the name of one of my wife's horses), and then as both pltrgyst and entrpoop Still have great memories...

In ½ hour easily make your own cue ball place-holder (for mid-game CB cleaning)

...or you could just use anything similar to this, available for about $2 from any gambling supplier (like Spinetti's, in Vegas). All you need is something with two right-angle surfaces, two inches tall or more, that won't mar the cloth.

    Smorgass Bored

My condolences to his Barbarachnid and those who knew him well, particularly Joey. During all the years of RSB banter, I never got to shoot pool with him, but did get to play some poker with him down in Tampa a couple of years ago. He was as nice a guy in person as Becky & Jim -- and others --...

tournament dilemma: what would you do?

Yes, but Gardner was a terrifically complex and interesting person, IMO one of the greatest minds of my lifetime, along with e.e.cummings and a few others. MvS couldn't carry his jock. Well, I mean technically she *could*, but the picture would look really strange in Parade magazine. -- Larry

    Loss of an icon

It's always painful to lose a favorite, but especially so when you've looked up to someone for most of your life. I followed Steve religiously ever since first seeing him walk into pool rooms in Woodbridge, Perth Amboy, and Metuchen NJ as a teen-ager. He was only two years older than I, which...

scratch golf Exactly. Those scores won't make a community college team. My bro-in-law was (and is) a scratch golfer -- hits the ball like a gorilla, and dead accurate, by my standards -- and he couldn't even make the team at Wake Forest. -- Larry
