when the white ferrule came out, it was on the classic line, that was a solid shaft, it didn't have the foam in it.

that's why when you put a hard tip on it, it gets some of that sound/hit back.

the ferrule isn't what makes it soft and quiet... it's the sound dampening foam running down the center of it.
