filler v hoang is a barn burner. big crowd, tense, and the pressure on both is palpable. the crowd is fairly respectful. filler takes the first 4-1 after only one missed ball.

Duong played great, especially in the last two sets. But he also made enough mistakes that Filler should have won.

As I said in another thread, Filler has been slightly more erratic since the WPA-WNT spat. Obviously still a threat to win every tourney he plays in. Obviously still one of the top three players in the world. But he does seem less ... invincible (For that matter, so has Gorst this year).

It could also be just that it's the rising quality of players. Not just the young guys, either.

Hoang was a very good player a few years ago, but he was borderline top 50. At best. Yet he's become arguably a top 10-15 player worldwide by playing so much on the international scene. His safety play and tactics used to be a sore spot. Not so anymore. And his jumping is now elite. It wasn't two or three years ago.

Great crowd.

Duong has been very impressive since the Reyes Cup. I didn't know much about him historically, but he's very relaxed and measured. Great fundamentals.

Filler was playing in another universe last year, so i was expecting a bit of regression eventually. No one can keep that up forever. Still one of the top on the planet any given day.

Duong, who is now 38, hardly played any international events until 2022. He dipped his toes into the waters that year. The World Cup of Pool might have whetted his appetite.

He had a break-through of sorts in 2023, when he knocked SVB out of the World Pool Championship and finished fifth. At the time I had no idea who he was.

He also finished 5th in 2023 in the WNT Spanish Open, which was the one and only time that major has been held.

Duong won his first WNT ranking event in 2024, capturing the Scottish Open. He's been making it to the knockout stage or top 32 regularly since then.

His game is light years away from where it was two or three years ago. Shows what happens when you test yourself regularly against the best.
