Bumperless butt

What are some cons about having a bumperless butt ? I’m thinking of having a full splice brent summers blank made with a bumperless hoppe style butt also extension ready . I love the look is it a bad idea ? Thanks

One issue with a bumperless cue is that the bottom is slick and when you lean it against something when you are done shooting it has a tendency to slide and fall if you do not have carpeted floors. I have a few and that was the issue I had. When I shot pool at my friend’s house I would do my best to remember to put it straight up and down or put it where the bottom of the butt was against something to prevent it.

Two things;
1st, antique cues didn't come with a bumper. The bumper was added as noise suppression, as opposed to protection.
2nd, s mentioned above, the cue will slide on floors and "tink" when tapped around hard floors. Players generally do not care for bumperless cues.

If you know the purpose of the bumper on a cue then by applying simple logic, you should be able to figure the only down side to a bumper less cue.

I'm a big fan of Bumperless....take care of it and you're good. You mention bumperless and an extension... how does that work?

Its fine AS LONG as long as you ONLY play on carpet. I've had a couple bumperless cues and i only used them in carpeted rooms.

My current cue is not traditional "bumperless" but it does lack a rubber bumper. And it has an extension. Bacote cue with a super light walnut extension.

I tend to rest it on my foot, instead of the floor if the floor is not soft.

Beautiful piece of wood👍

Gee thanks
Sorry I was grumpy this morning. But what I said is true. Bumper-less looks cool but you'll bang the shit out of the but cap. Maybe even crack or chip it. Not rocket science to figure out if you play a lot of pool and have a habit of slamming your cue into the floor like I do, you might not want to go bumper-less. If you are really careful with you cue or if it's going in a display case princess go for it.

This makes sense, I had a friend trying out a light weight cue I made and we thought it sounded a little odd (hollow like). I realized I grabbed it before putting on the bumper. The bumper changed the sound to wear we thought it was more normal sounding.

Personally I love the feedback and look og bumperless hoppe cues, but I'm vary about recommending them to customers as they are easily abused.

I'm with you, which is why I do the small leather bumper with the exposed bolt head. It is a minimal compromise in the sound and feedback with some level of protection.

I once knew a player with anger issues. His butt even with a bumper was cracked from him pounding it on the floor.

This isn't that uncommon. I've seen enough butt caps completely destroyed due to pressure that the rubber will cause when hit on the ground that I don't believe the rubber is as much protection as people think.

The long and short of it is that if you want a cue to remain pristine for a long time, you will figure out ways to take care of it. If you don't care, your cue will reflect that.
