Meucci Diamond Ebony

Hello everyone.

I would like to ask for your opinions about this Cue thay I bought from Seybert. It was advertised as Limited Diamond Ebony cues, which made from African Ebony.

So, I got it delivered, and several people I showed it to have criticized it to some degrees

1/ the Wood Grains dont appear to be African Ebony, Jet Black or Deeper Black. This Grains is of lower quality Ebony, Substitutes of Asian Ebony...etc..

2/ there is no number on the Cues, it means this is a regular production run and not limited run. I emailed SeyBert and they confirmed this is Limited Edition. The numbering just doesnt look good on the cue, so they didn't have it on.

3/ a teammate showed his Predator BLAK 4 and it ebony color looked deeper, blacker. He even said that his predator would be more likely to hold value than the Meucci ?

Anyone out there can confirm if African Ebony do look this light ? Thanks

Ebony can have all kinds of variation or streaking. It doesn’t mean the wood isn’t good quality, just not as visually appealing as the jet black stuff. If it wasn’t advertised as jet black, I don’t see an issue. Did the listing say it was supposed to be African ebony?

Almost all ebony is african sourced. even if its not african it still looks like ebony to me. what are you worried about? nice cue. way too ornate for my taste but still nice design. btw, its not listed as a LE cue on Meucci site. Seybert's says 'DiamondLimited' but Meucci's site says nothing about it being 'Limited', only the 50thAnniv. cues use that term. As for that Predator, i would not be surprised if they added a lil 'blackener' to the wood.

Gaboon is generally blacker, macassar is lighter overall and more grain patterns. Just based on your pics it looks more like Gab than Mac to me. Just enjoy using it and don't worry about this stuff. As for later re-sale these hi-$$$ fancy Meucci's are usually sold to Meucci fanboys. Predator cues seem to have a bit more universal appeal. You'd probably take a pretty big hit $$-wise unless someone just fell in love with it.

Without seeing it in person it's hard to say for sure, but the pictures also make it look like you might have some mineral deposits in the grain. This isn't uncommon in a lot of exotic woods and will appear like super small bubbles in the actual grain. I dealt with this very issue in an hustler cue I have that's made from some type of rosewood blank and that's how I learned about it.

Overall, it's a nice Meucci and I'd say it most likely is ebony. It's just not the jet black stuff we see a lot of in cues. Also, for what it's worth, that jet black stuff is getting more difficult to attain and can demand a premium. Yes, the gaboon is just sealed and the Macassar is more brown than black. With sealer the macassar gets darker but not black.
 
At least you know its real species of ebony, i would say your friends cue was painted.
Even if its says real, i wouldn't trust it, on these production models.seeing some grain its a good thing. Anyway enjoy your cue.

I owned a Frey SP that was Macassar ebony and it had a 12 inch very light streak through the middle of the cue butt- ebony has many, many variations. I have seen ebony cues selling for thousands with very visible lighter grain streaks throughout. In fact, I owned and then sold one of those too. I personally do prefer the darker less grainy or streaky ebony examples.

Looks ok to me. Ebony can run from a goldfish look to deepest midnight.
Gotta watch those marketing terms. Btw... Doesn't seyberts tell you someplace that a cue's color may vary from the representative ad??
