hydex

Metal split die in a tailstock holder.
Pretty straight forward and simple.
Do the i.d. work after it's installed
i can make the inserts and i do have the die holder on my lathee. I was just asking if there was a faster way to cut a longer length of rod to a smaller size, since this material is flexing when i try to do any length longer than 2.5 inches at a time
Your picture says Juma on the bottom, is that the material you used ,or are those hydex or maple

I've used juma, hydex, phenolic.
All thread pretty easy when done correctly
my question has still gone unanswered with hydex i i have made them from tomahawk, maple, etc. Hydex too, however my question is only with hydex. Time to move on from this thread

So Mr Webb how well does juma hold up as an insert, does it last

No trouble yet. With what your trying to do in length.
Good luck
Make some and evaluate as you go.
That's the way it's done!

Out of curiosity, why do you want them so long.
If you ever made inserts from hydex you would know. If it was possible to machine one oiece the diameter of the alignment barrel it woul;d streamline the process. It is a timely process to make one insert imo not worth the time involved

I have found that trying to make threaded inserts consumes a lot of time and I'm not really set up for live threading so trying to do die threading has not worked so well either. What I do now is I buy 2" nylon bolts 1/2 inch by 13 and I turned the head down to.550" and then I bore tap the hole in the shaft and when cured, I drill bore tap for whatever I need. With shipping total cost per bolt is about just under $2 and nylon is pretty tough and creates a really nice firm feel especially on a 3/8 by 10 or radial pin.
