WPA Women’s 8 Ball Final - Foul Call

Interesting situation in the final rack of the WPA women’s eight ball championships. Kelly Fisher is kicking at the six ball. If I’ve done it right, the video goes to the correct time. If not, fast-forward to one hour and 23 minutes.

Clearly, Kelly hits the rail first and then the six ball. The issue is whether the cue ball hit the rail afterward. Despite what Erik believed in commentary, I think the ref called it a foul (his head shake to me meant no rail). Obviously the CB isn’t frozen when it came to rest.

Interestingly, unlike some recent high profile matches, they went to a video review (which I applaud). Unless there was much better video than what we see on the stream, I don’t think it would be possible to overturn the call. I certainly can’t definitively see the CB hit a rail - even when I slowed it down and blew it up on my phone.

Also, the referee was in a good position to make the call for a change.

In any event, congrats to Chezka, one of my favourite women to watch. A deserving champion.

If you listen after the call, Jasmin says "they just looked at it and looked at it and looked at it..." so my interpretation is they looked at that angle multiple times. So they'd have to go with the ref's initial call, and he was in the best position of anyone to make the call. Obviously refs can make mistakes, but this one was likely a correct call, and it doesn't seem like anyone is in position to really argue with it.
