Kielwood Snooker Shafts?

A friend of mine asked me if I’ve ever heard of anyone playing with a Kielwood or torrefied snooker shaft. I hadn’t, and a Google search showed no answers.

This doesn’t shock me, given how traditional most snooker players are with regard to their cues (great majority using ash, a few maple and only one pro I’ve ever seen try CF). Based on what I’ve seen about Kielwood shafts, it *should* be lower deflection than maple - not sure about vs ash.

That said, these are guesses, and I figured I would ask here to see if anyone had tried it.

Pearwood used to be common, my grandfather had one. Have also seen purple heart, but not really on a pro level.
Ash and Maple are really the standard - I imagine this rise to the top was primarily based on quality to price ratio
Carbon is a gimmick, as it is in pool. Not sure snooker is, or ever will be, truly ready for that.
 
I played alot of snooker and mostly used wood(10mm) shafts and the occasional switch to an ash 3/4 cue or 2pc that i still have. I never heard of Kielwood until recently and as far as deflection went if I could place the black on its spot and the CB on the brown spot and cut it in the corner with full side and hit the rail just by the side pocket the shaft was good.

Looks like you don’t really understand deflection.
Making that shot is possible with any cue, depending you compensate for deflection correctly.
On such long shots, all shafts will require compensation in aim, if not for deflection, then for the swerve.

That's a tough shot. The pros would probably struggle with that one.

No side at all. Just makes the shot harder than it already is over that distance. It's not that side doesn't help, but the deflection between cueball and object ball is so hard to gauge. We used to play a version of HORSE/SKATE - and the players I know who were good at this shot, are using top spin only.

Agree, I reckon a pro would be pretty happy to get that 1 in 5. In fact, as a result of this thread, I want to know, and have asked a couple.
