Background and Path to Cue Making
Hercek’s journey into cue making is unusually deep and grounded. He grew up around the game (his father played both three-cushion and pocket billiards) but was more fascinated by the cues themselves than by competition. Before becoming a maker, he spent years as a dealer in fine and collectible cues, giving him intimate knowledge of the best work from earlier masters. He also spent 14 years in forestry with the Lake County Forest Preserve in Illinois, which gave him an exceptional practical understanding of wood properties, grain, stability, and how different species behave under stress and over time.
In the early 1990s he became close with the late master craftsman Burton Spain. When Spain was diagnosed with cancer in 1993, he offered to sell his business to Hercek. Joel completed an intensive eight-month apprenticeship under Spain, absorbing the demanding full-splice blank technique—a traditional, labor-intensive method that dates to the origins of cue making and that Spain had perfected. For the first 25 years of his career, every single cue Hercek built used full-splice construction. He later refined and evolved his methods (including some conventional splices in more recent years), but the full-splice foundation remains a hallmark of his reputation.

• One-of-a-kind philosophy: Every Hercek cue is unique. He refuses to copy other makers’ designs and spends weeks or months researching and developing original concepts inspired by architecture, historical art periods, nature, music, and artists such as Picasso or Frank Lloyd Wright.
