So is that a thumbs up on the coring technique if the dab of RTV is the discussion?

Don't answer that....how ever long it's been, you probably have longevity at it far longer than any of us here.
If it's not broke, why fix it?
Personally, I would travel in a different direction....but that's just me. IF I were doing coring your way I would certainly entertain some of the other suggestions put forth through out the thread on a different way to go about it. But that's just me.
