Question Pool popularity increasing or decreasing?? - 01-11-2019, 06:12 AM

Hello fellows,

Do you feel pool is increasing or decreasing in popularity in the USA and Canada?

It worries me that when I was a teenager there were quite a few pool halls and only two gyms in my city. Now most of the pool halls are gone and there are many gyms.

Thank you,

C&A

Decreasing for sure.

If you don't believe me try to sell something pool related and see how long you are stuck with it. Sad but true.

It is damn depressing too as I love all games of pool except those played on a bar box.

Hi, I noticed this article with an interesting paragraph:
Quote:
"There was an age of billiards, and it has been over for so long that most of us have no idea how huge billiards once was. For many decades, starting in the mid-19th century, billiards was the one of the most popular amusements. A hundred years ago, there were 830 pool halls in the city of Chicago. Today, there are 10."
and this article:
Quote:
"In an interview in 1974, Phil Longo lamented the decline of billiards over the course of his life, noting that of the 200 billiard parlors that existed in Philadelphia in the 1930s, only 70 remained. Using the definition of billiards parlor Longo would have used, there were virtually none remaining in the city in 2015. The last true billiards parlor, Tacony Billiards, closed in 2013."

I live in the Midwest and from what i see its more stagnate than anything. Casinos and smoking laws killed a lot of play but in the last few years league play has come up quite a bit. Action pool is waaay down tho.
