Where is the action in Seattle? My dad just moved to the Seattle area, (Auburn). He is a very good player, he has been away from the game for a couple of years, and is looking to find where the players are in that area. Where are the tournaments, and where do the best players play out there. Any info would be appreciated.

Bigdog,

I think Harry Platis plays up there somewhere doesn't he? He's one of the big money players and I believe his game is 1h.

There is a lot of good quality players in the Seattle area but I'm not sure where to find them. The best place used to be Dr. Cue's in Seattle. I have heard the action has died off as of late due to a lot of the players taking up poker. I, myself, play at Riverside Billiards and Blues in Mount Vernon (60 miles north of Seattle). There is usually one-pocket or nine ball action up there although not real big. Some people also go to the Breaking Point in Lynnwood, I haven't heard anything as far as gambling action there though. As far as tournaments go, there is usually something going on each weekend. This weekend it is at Shotzes in Everett. It is the Washington State eight ball championships. 64 player field that usually fills up. Have your dad pick up a copy of On the Wire. It is free and they list all the local and regional tourneys several months in advance. Send me a PM with a phone number and I'll give him a call if you like.

Hey man-
I went to college at UW and played in pretty much all the halls up there. If he is in Auburn he may want to check out Harveys poolhall...it is in Renton/Tukwila. Some very good filipino players in there named Joey and Raul A. and several others. I heard a new place down there opened up in Renton I think called Sunset Family Billiards, new GC4's I think. Was a McDermott or Pechauer Tour stop this past year.
If he gets up into Seattle, Dr. Cues in Bothell is where all the main sticks hang out and gamble. Tourneys T/Th. Not uncommon to see Platis playing $1000/rack 1-P. New owners have put a bunch in the place including diamond lights on all front tables. Good Ventillation for smoke.
Jillians Seattle is just another club with pool tables..but they are GC's and they have a 12x6 snooker table. Same with Belltown Billiards, a club with pooltables. The Garage on Capital Hill is an alright place with good food. If he makes it up to Lynnwood, The Breaking Point has been remodelled and is very nice...if you can stand the 13 year olds. He can also go a little south to City Lights, I think they have Wednesday tourneys.

Here is a link to the bigger Regional tourneys and a link to the WA tourneys . But there are many more bar tourneys that aren't listed. Goldies on 45th in the Wallingford area of Seattle was a profitable one for me, Tuesday 9ball, Sunday 8ball. Legends in West Seattle had good turn outs as well.

I am sure your dad can find action at Dr. Cues or Harveys if he so desires. Whenever I head back there to visit I go to Dr. Cues, where I used to play. Any more questions feel free to shoot em at me.

On another note, I am not sure of all what is in Auburn except the SuperMall. If he wants to play in bar tourneys I'd suggest getting the local phone book and start calling around and make a day-by-day list of local tourneys. Ask how many players join up, if they add 100% to the tourney, etc. If he is a decent player he may be able to do pretty well in these tourneys since they may lack good pool players.
Bert is the owner of Harvey's...and Ken "Sarge" Aylesworth and his wife work/teach out of there. Sarge has been a top trick shot artist for a while and puts on a good show. Does it yearly at UW. He's a good guy.

A list of very good local players if you run across them:
Dan Louie
Harry Platis
Todd Marsh
Tim Tweedel
John "JD" Dougherty
Kris Iverson
Tom Akins
Raul A.
Scott Reed
Scott Chandler
Randy C.
Rich Geiler
Mike Zimmerman
Etc. Etc. Etc.

Thanks for the info, he has played some of these guys, I know he has played Rich Geiler for sure. Didn't "Sarge" used to live in Southern California? I remember him from somewhere but not sure where.

My dads name is Mike Boyce. He played in tournaments back in late 80"s and early 90's. One of the tournaments at Hard Times he drew Johhny Archer first match, beat him 9-8, next played Ernesto beat him 9-4, had to play Kim Davenport next and lost to him. Ended up going to losers side and beat L.A. player "underdog" 9-3, I think before going on to get eliminated by Doc Brienza. That was his best tournament, he has always been tough for the money, but tournaments are a different beast and he has usually had a hard time getting going in the big tournaments.

Hi Guys, been a while!

I'll be playing a lot more local tourneys now that fishing season is almost over up here and the earlier evenings set in. He can email me at ryleyf@gmail.com and I'll steer him to what is happening.

I usually have been playing Mccory's on Thursday's in Woodinville, and Great American Casino in Everett on Sundays when I get the chance. That place draws alot of good talent out of the north end.

Have him shoot me some mail.

Todd, how the hell have you been?

I played Tim Tweedel at the old Cicchitti's Tournament in Bellingham a few years back. I lost the lag and never got a shot in 9 games. I proceeded to win 5 matches on the B side before Mike Zimmerman beat me 9-2 after I ran the first 2 racks before coming up dry on my third break. Zimmerman is one of the most underrated players around IMO. Take him lightly and pay the consequences.....

Sarge and Charli Aylesworth come from Phoenix, Arizona. I have known Sarge for years and I was invited to their wedding several years ago which was held in Prescott, Arizona during one of the women's tournaments - all the big names. Sarge was doing a trick shot exhibition as part of the tournament promotion. He came to Missoula, MT and gave an exhibition at the University of Montana last fall. If you get a chance to see him he gives a good show. I just talked to him this evening. Sarge and Charli are good people.

thebigdog,
Ask your dad if he remembers Jack Madden. I used to work construction and boomed out when it was bad in Phoenix. Worked in San Fran during the 80's. Played pool all the time all over the area since the family was in Phoenix. Did some tournament playing but mostly just in the rooms. If he isn't sure there is a picture of me taken in the 80's on the 2nd page of my web site.
