John was a great guy first, then a great player. He was quite a character as he lumbered around the table. Wheezing out various comical statements including the famous "Arrrgh, salty dog". Walking into a one pocket event with John was like walking in with a rock star. Everyone knew John. And the story of how he took 75 cents into ring game and ended up playing in Detroit. Winning a bathtub full of money back in the '60s. I learned a lot from John. It would have been nice to learn more. Cancer took him. I remember the fun we had.
