Does your pool room have 2 distinct areas to it?

One where when you started going in, you were a banger or playing casually with your friend/girlfriend, then you got better and moved to the "front room" where you started
playing ring games and getting a taste of being a decent player?

The old Cue & Cushion on No. Shepherd (old Le Cue from further South) was like that. “L” shaped. One side 9’ Gold Crown 3s for players, one side 8’ Gold Crowns for date nite, bangers and wanna-bees.

Not "mine" but The Rack in Levonia MI has a side with 6 Diamond tables where most of the time the players go to and another side with some other tables where I usually see groups of kids. That other side does house a snooker table and I think a 3 C table so there are still good players there on those tables.

The pool hall I most often go to has 3 7 footers and 8 9 footers, most of the drunk bar types stay on the 7 footers, but there is a mix of non-players on the 9 footers most of the time as well. None of the "players" I have seen on the 7 footers unless some drunk guy challenges someone walking by them hehe.

Many places also have a house table for action/regulars to use if not a whole separate area.

If it’s done right a players room and a bangers area is the stone cold nuts for a proper pool room.

The bangers can make noise, drink, bang balls, have fun, louder music, what ever makes them happy and spend $ to support the business.

The players area, music(but not so loud it’s a issue or just the spill over sound from the bangers area-I’ve seen this work great-just some ambient noise), no distractions from the bangers,

Just lots gambling, woofing, etc. I’ve seen cards (gin, 21, 3 card Monte) out in the open as well. More space between the tables, I’ve seen bleacher seating or old school the wet seats (Jointed Cue in Sacramento) a good rail for the rail birds to bet.

Hardtimes in Sacramento has this layout as well. It’s a win for everyone

The bangers sometimes pop in to have a look out of curiosity which is cool, they never really stay-the party is clearly in the other room.

Players don’t get distracted by a hot girl, a drunk, or super loud music.

Imo this is the absolute best pool room design. Sadly I’m most markets these days the “players or back” room would just sit.

In smaller rooms I’ve seen 3-5 table areas for “players” only and that can work too, but not as well as separate rooms.

Best
Fatboy😃<——-not to bright, but does know a thing or two about pool room layouts.

In this day and age, smash in 7’ boxes and grab all the $ you can. The old days of a gambling room in the back-sadly is a thing of the past. The few that are left, makes me happy they are still there. Those are special joints and we need to support them.

I remember players in Columbus had those 2 areas in the later part.
Membership for the other room where the tables were better and the match ups happened.

Yes. You started by getting robbed for a buck or two on the valley tables. You can peek over the half wall and look at the Gold Crowns. Houseman let you know when it was time to move to the other side of the room. It was a privilege, not a right. Going from quarters to table time was like graduation.

That’s pretty much the way it is up here. 7 foot diamonds on one side, and nine footers on the other.

Most of the leagues and bangers play on the 17 bar boxes and most good action is on the 6 big tables.

Interestingly though, because of the number of tables, most of the tournaments, even high-level/open tournaments, play on the seven footers…

It was the same with the long narrow halls I grew up playing in. The table at the front was the action table, and as you went deeper in the hall the level of play typically went down. When you started in the back you were next to the toilet, the toilet wasn’t enclosed by the way. Lol old days in rural KY.
