The draw for the 2008 WPBSA World Professional English Billiards Championship has been released. The tournament will again be held at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds (UK) between 23rd and 27th of July. Admission is free.

Group A
Mike Russel (Qatar)
Devendra Joshi (India)
Gary Rogers (York)
Michael Kreuziger (Austria)

Group B
David Causier (Middlesbrough)
Paul Bennett (Stockton)
Dhruv Sitwala (India)
Sourav Kothari (India)

Group C
Peter Gilchrist (Singapore)
Geet Sethi (India)
Alok Kumar (India)
Rupesh Shah (India)

Group D
Chris Shutt (Norton)
Pankaj Advani (India)
Ian Williamson (Leeds)
Mark Hirst (Bradford)

Defending champion Mike Russell will be vying for his 9th title. Other former champions competing include Geet Sethi (x6), Peter Gilchrist (x2), and Chris Shutt (x1).

Interesting to see Michael Kreuziger competing for Austria as a change from the usual UK-India-Australia suspects. Although with little hope of progressing, Michael is largely responsible for developing English Billiards in Austria, where it appears to be gaining something of a cult following.

Products of Middlesbrough's own Teesside Boys Billiards League are shown in bold. Haway The Lads!!

You've been away too long Ray, times have changed. There's no chance you'd get the gun through customs nowadays.

Lest we forget.

Seriously Boro it must be great to have this on your doorstep, your neck of the woods is the strongest in the world no doubt so for somebody who loves that great game it must be fun to have those guys around. I remember when Russell came through and took the mantel from Seethi, he is such a dominant player it is a shame he is not rewarded better. Anything you can give us from this tournament would be great. Billiard players who look like stars almost anywhere else are made to look like bangers up there in the northeast. Hard to bet against Russell snapping it off again.

I won't be going unfortunately Ray. This is England remember. My doorstep measures 6", not 2 hours drive to Leeds. I'll be relying on John Hartley's reports in the Evening Gazette. Hopefully it will be back on Teesside where it belongs in the not too distant future.
