Here are the final match and game records for the 2022 Mosconi Cup.

Scoring the way it counts, by matches:
Day 1 -- USA 3, Europe 1
Day 2 -- USA 1, Europe 3
Day 3 -- USA 2, Europe 4
Day 4 -- USA 1, Europe 3
Total -- 7 - 11 (USA winning percentage of 39%)

Scoring by games rather than matches:
Day 1 -- USA 16, Europe 16
Day 2 -- USA 14, Europe 17
Day 3 -- USA 18, Europe 24
Day 4 -- USA 14, Europe 18
Total -- 62 - 75 (USA winning percentage of 45%)

Match Records of Individual players. For the following records, I counted a full win or loss for each player in each match (i.e., not splitting the point into fifths for the teams match or halves for doubles matches). So these numbers essentially answer the question: "In how many winning and losing matches was each player involved?" [Note: These records show wins and losses, so a record like 1-2 means 1 win and 2 losses, not 1 win out of 2 matches.]

Team USA
• Shane Van Boening ..... 0-2 singles, 4-0 doubles, 1-0 teams, 5-2 total (winning percentage of 71%)
• Earl Strickland ..... 0-2 singles, 1-2 doubles, 1-0 teams, 2-4 total (33% )
• Skyler Woodward ..... 2-1 singles, 2-1 doubles, 1-0 teams, 5-2 total (71%)
• Tyler Styer ..... 0-2 singles, 1-1 doubles, 1-0 teams, 2-3 total (40%)
• Oscar Dominguez ..... 0-1 singles, 0-2 doubles, 1-0 teams, 1-3 total (25%)
Team USA Total ..... 2-8 singles, 8-6 doubles, 5-0 teams, 15-14 total (52%)
Team Europe
• Jayson Shaw ..... 3-0 singles, 0-3 doubles, 0-1 teams, 3-4 total (43%)
• Albin Ouschan ..... 1-0 singles, 1-1 doubles, 0-1 teams, 2-2 total (50%)
• Joshua Filler ..... 2-1 singles, 2-1 doubles, 0-1 teams, 4-3 total (57%)
• David Alcaide ..... 2-0 singles, 1-2 doubles, 0-1 teams, 3-3 total (50%)
• Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz ..... 0-1 singles, 2-1 doubles, 0-1 teams, 2-3 total (40%)
Team Europe Total ..... 8-2 singles, 6-8 doubles, 0-5 teams, 14-15 total (48%)

Another way of looking at the match records is to count a full point for each player in a singles win or loss, half a point for each player in a doubles win or loss, and one-fifth of a point for each player in a team win or loss. So the following numbers essentially answer the question: "What numerical contribution did each player make to the overall Mosconi Cup match scores?"

Team USA
• Van Boening ..... 2.2 - 2.0 (winning percentage of 52%)
• Earl Strickland ..... 0.7 - 3.0 ( 19%)
• Woodward ..... 3.2 - 1.5 (68%)
• Styer ..... 0.7 - 2.5 (22%)
• Dominguez ..... 0.2 - 2.0 (9%)
Team USA Total ..... 7 - 11 (39%)

Team Europe
• Shaw ..... 3.0 - 1.7 (64%)
• Ouschan ..... 1.5 - 0.7 (68%)
• Filler ..... 3.0 - 1.7 (64%)
• Alcaide ..... 2.5 - 1.2 (68%)
• Sanchez-Ruiz ..... 1.0 - 1.7 (37%)
Team Europe Total ..... 11 - 7 (61%)

Game Records of Individual Players. Counting half a point for each player in a doubles win or loss (so the totals will add to 137 games), here are the individual records for games won and lost (including the 8 games played in the teams match):

Team USA
• Van Boening ..... 18.0 - 15.5 (winning percentage of 54%)
• Strickland ..... 9.0 - 18.0 (33%)
• Woodward ..... 19.0 - 17.0 (53%)
• Styer ..... 11.0 - 14.5 (43%)
• Dominguez ..... 5.0 - 10.0 (33%)
Team USA Total ..... 62 - 75 (45%)

Team Europe
• Shaw ..... 19.0 - 17.5 (52%)
• Ouschan ..... 10.5 - 6.0 (64%)
• Filler ..... 21.0 - 16.0 (57%)
• Alcaide ..... 16.0 - 11.5 (58%)
• Sanchez-Ruiz ..... 8.5 - 11.0 (44%)
Team Europe Total ..... 75 - 62 (55%)

So we got drummed in singles matches losing 8 out of 10 but we were able to win 8 out of 14 scotch doubles matches - that’s encouraging!

Shane surprisingly lost both his singles matches (0-2) but won all his doubles matches (4-0), so the past criticism that he’s not a good team player is just not the case this year.

So who ended up winning the MVP? Was it Filler or Shaw? Shane, Sky and Filler were the only players that won 4 matches. And if you count the opening team match Shane and Sky won 5 matches to Filler’s 4. Shaw was most impressive with his 3-0 singles record, but was 0-3 in doubles.

Thanks. I guess the last table shows how Filler won the MVP with 21 points.

If Sky had been able to win his singles match yesterday (which he should have except for missing a very easy shot which would have given him a 4-1 lead in that match) which would have tied up the overall score at 8, even if the US had gone on to lose it would have been hard to not award the MVP to him instead of Filler, as the only player with 5 wins, 6 if you count the opening team win.

It is funny why Shane doesn`t win more single matches. I don`t have the stats but it seems like it has been that way forever.

The 8-6 record for USA in doubles is by my Method A, where a full win is given to both teammates (whereas just half a point is given to each one in Method B). There were actually just 7 doubles matches; USA won 4 and lost 3.

So, Earl wasn't the weakest link for USA
I’d have bet the moon he wasn’t gonna be the weak link on a prop bet. I had confidence in him. Still do. He has heart and experience. Counts for a lot out there. Sure he missed a few easy shots, but he’s a winner and knows how to take the heat. 💪💪

It’s a team effort and the 60/40 thing in a 2 horse horse-race isn’t ever gonna work.

Hopefully next year we show up stronger and mentally tougher. Imo that’s what needs to be worked on.

Fatboy
