When I think of 3-ball, I think of the old pink-ball or pay-ball games on the 6X12 snooker table they used to have at Cochran's Billiards in the mid-60's when I was stationed near there. I wasn't much of a railbird back then (same room as Ronnie Allen and I hardly ever watched him play 1-pocket!), but I remember Denny Searces always seemed to just kill that game no matter who was in it, and in fact they barred him from the game at one point. I got pretty good on the 6X12 and could make some eye-popping shots, but I never saw anything like what Denny could do; he'd just step up and fire in length-of-the-table straight ins like they were hangers.Guy named Greg Stevens from Houston could really bring it, when his "mix" was right. Of all the games I've ever seen or played, that game carries the least luck; the best player pretty much always wins. I think that hurt the popularity because if you're outclassed, you really don't have a prayer, and it's hard to adjust for a fair game. I think a fair case could be made that high-dollar pay-ball on a 6X12 is the ultimate "gut-check" gambler's game...pretenders need not apply.
