Don't think last pocket 8 ball is anything special, it's just playing position and a bit of 1 pocket strategy if needed. Straight 8, same thing, just shit rules. Any good player can play them as well as any "specialist". Once you get into a competent player level, the gaffe games don't pose much of an issue to them. I played a few Hispanic people in NJ recently that wanted to play last pocket 8 ball, I won as many games in that as in regular 8 ball, including several break and runs. Now if we are talking about bar table play with a heavy cueball, there are a few known great players at that who could be considered better than others.
