8-Ball Tournaments for non-APA players in Connecticut / getting an APA ranking

Been scavenging Facebook and websites for 8-Ball tournaments in Connecticut for non-APA players. No luck. I understand, you don't want a ringer coming in and handicaps would make a tournament more fair. I don't have an APA ranking, used to play in a Pot of Gold league years ago. Do I need to join a league to get an APA ranking? Have some time constraints at this stage in my life with other commitments where it would be difficult to join a league but I would like the ability to play in a tournament from time to time.

Some of the APA tournaments don't require you to play in the league. Might be put on by a league operator but, they let in others.
Not sure if I'm describing this correctly.

I have seen tournament flyers that look like they are an APA only event. When I go up there to practice or something the guy says oh, you can play if you want. Tournament was just being run by a league operator.

APA is not for you.

In the 2 years I was in APA there was only 1 tournament that didn't require membership and that was, essentially, a membership drive tournament.

Basically, their tournaments are for their teams, they have some singles tournaments but you need to be on a team. The only way to play in any of the "real" tournaments is by being a member and playing on a team. They have minimum requirements (usually 4 or 6 matches) for members to play in tournaments.

You could sub on a team and only play when you want, but you'd have to get the minimum matches in to play in any of their tournaments.
