8-ball wedged in pocket

Today, I was playing a casual scotch doubles 8-ball game with friends. The situation was that my partner was down on the 8-ball, which was hanging in the corner pocket. She caught the 8-ball a little more than full and this was the result:

The 8-ball and the cueball were absolutely wedged in the pocket! You couldn't even get the balls to drop if you kicked the table. How do you rule this or escape this shot? Is the cueball still in play?

i say it is your opponents turn. when they shoot, if the 8 falls, you win.

I ended up saying that the ball was still in play because it was on the table, I made him shoot and the 8 did fall haha. I didn't know what to say because this has never happened to me before.

I have never seen this with a cue ball and an object ball but I have seen it with two object balls. The tournament director reached down and picked up the ball that was most on the table, allowing the other ball to fall in the pocket. He then placed the other ball back on the lip of the pocket and told the same shooter to continue. I don't know if that was proper or not. I would be interested to hear what Jay Helfert has to say or any other TD...

In this instance, the girl clearly loses. In the BCA official rule book it states under rule #3.33

JAWED BALLS

If two or more balls are locked between the jaws or sides of the pocket, with one or more suspended in air, the referee shall inspect the balls in position and follow this procedure: he shall visually (or physically if he desires) project each ball directly downward from it's locked position; any ball that in his judgement would fall into the pocket if so moved directly downward is a pocketed ball, while any ball that would come to rest on the bed of the table is not pocketed. The balls are then placed according to the referee's assessment, and play continues according to specific game rules as if no locking or jawing of balls had occurred.

Since it is apparent that both of these balls would fall into the pocket if the other wasn't there they both would go in which results in scratching on the 8-ball.

Had this happen one time while practicing. The 8 was in the pocket just like that and I kicked at it wedging it in. I laughed it off and tried it again doing the exact same thing. Then I was mad that I didn't have it on video

If either ball would drop if not interfered with by the other ball, it is considered a pocketed ball. In this case, both balls are pocketed and someone scratched on the 8 ball.

i assume this is a diamond table, i had it happen with two object balls, i slammed the cue into the balls and the one ball rattled and the cue rolled back onto the table and neither ball fell. my buddy and i had a big laugh, took pictures , unlodged the balls and started over again. it happened on a 7 foot pro cut pocket diamond table.

Good call by Dick Neighbors..(post #5)
..they're both in the pocket.

and that Gold Crown could use some decent, clean cloth....
...and new pocket facings

Yeah it is a Gold Crown at SoHo Billiards. The tables are beat up here and there and the cloth is dirty. What can you ask for when you pitched in $5-$6 for a 3 hour day-time special?
