8ball and 9ft tables

Ok, the other day, i was practicing 8ball, and decided to play on a 9foot table instead of a 7ft, and i was breaking from the box.

The first thing i noticed was no matter how hard i broke, i couldnt get a decent spread to save my life. I was hitting the 1ball fairly solid, which could be a cause for not getting a decent spread. But the other thing i noticed, was basically all the balls stayed at the far side of the table.

Now this made me think of the IPT and wanting to do 8ball on a 9ft table, with " slow nap cloth " like they say.

Which made me think, if i have a hard time getting the balls to spread on a regular 9ft table, how will the pro's get the balls to move on a slow table?

I also started to think, why wouldnt they use a 8ft table? I have always thought a 8ft table is perfect for playing 8ball, because a 9ft table is too big expecially if you do get the balls to spread, its a easy run out. And 7ft tables, alot of times balls get bunched up.

But with the 8ft, its inbetween both, so you dont hafta worry about not being able to break the rack well, along with probably having less balls being cluster'd.

just my thoughts on it.

If you're breaking from the box I don't understand why you're not getting a good spread unless the rack isn't tight or you're not hitting the head ball square or have to much draw on the cueball and it's not transfering the energy through the rack. If you're breaking on the second ball then it makes sense. Here in our little part of the world it's very hard to find a bar box so we always play on the big table. FWIW

Edit: I just realized you mentioned breaking from the box. So the comments I wrote about the second ball break where not applicable. Sorry. :)

Every try the 2nd ball break where you hit the second ball in the rack, or in the case of a 9footer some people hit the 3rd ball. You can hit the rack at less than full speed, get a good spread with a good possibility of a ball dropping, and control the cueball of the side rail to the center of the table.

When playing on a 7foot barbox I usually use the second ball break as well. But if I'm not getting a good results with it, bar box or 9footer, I will switch it up and use the head on break. I also find if my opponent is slug racking me and not freezing the head ball, I can bypass it altogether with the second ball break. There also tends to be divots in the table where the head ball is racked as well, which could cause some breaking problems.

Using an 8footer may lead to more clusters and more safety play so I do not think they will do that. They already don't show straight pool on tv because it is "too slow". I'm surprized they haven't tried changing the fules of 8ball and calling it "Sudden Death 8ball" :)

8-Ball Break and Table Size...

I would agree that the larger the table the more challenging the 8-Ball break is...I play 8 & 9 on 9ftr's in League play weekly...I've found that off the rail I can generate more speed and decent control, (for 8-Ball), than from the kitchen...that said I have what I consider to be an excellent break cue, (good results with less effort), still have to execute though...I also think an 8ftr is perfect for 8-Ball...gives enough room for good spread, but not so big that the spread becomes onsided, (all balls south of the side pockets). I play 8-Ball Tourny's in a room that does them on 8 ftr's and enjoy it very much...frankly I spend more time with my 8-Ball break than my 9-Ball break...practice speed, stroke, placement, to apply english, draw, follow etc and find what produces the results you desire, (or closest to it), and really work that option to make it natural and as productive as possible for you...

Thanks for the responses guys,

I was looking more for a response towards the how the guys on the IPT would be breaking in 8ball, cuz of the slow nap cloth.

But i guess if you can do a 2nd or 3rd ball break from the box and still get a good result then, thats what they would be doing.

I have never been big on the second or 3rd ball break, probably cuz i could keep the CB on the table lol. But i will give it a try tomorrow.
