Ok i konw there are a lot of threads on this but im having trouble finding what im looking for.

Im trying to figure out how when ppl break in 9 ball they get the cb to hit the 1 bal then hop in the air and stop center of the table. can anyone explaing how this is done??
please and thank you
Mike

The cue ball hops in the air because it hits the head ball while it is airborne. Not a good thing. Why would you like to learn it. SQUAT is better than airborne in my opinion.

randy mostly i just want to konw. I was watching some video of svb and alex from clash of the titans and could see this in Alex's break the hop and then the cb sits right in the middle of the table.

break

Hit the one ball dead on just barely over center english and the cue ball will jump straight up slightly backwards from the rack and come down dead center and not move again. Makes me smile every time!!!!!!

Big Mike, you asked a very good question. After seeing a highly ranked pro be successful with the cue ball hopping up and stopping at the break you wanted to know how to do it. Very observant.

Of course, just shooting down on the cue ball will make it airborn. When it hits the head ball, it may be coming down or going up. After the collision, the cue ball will bounce back up. Does this have a positive effect on how the rack breaks up? I don't know. I haven't seen a slow motion video of it. But maybe Alex has had success with it.

At least now you know how to do it. Many players and instructors say this takes force away from the break, but so what? In the use of the soft break, there has been a great deal of success. This may be another new frontier.

Thanks for sharing and observing with an open mind.

If you hit 'dead center' cue-ball and strike the head-ball 'dead on', the
cue-ball is forced back because of the combined weight of the object
balls ( assuming a tight rack).
The cue-ball hops with this hit because it is hydroplaning on top of the
cloth so a 'center to center' hit is almost impossible.

Once in a while you will get a 'magic' break with this hit because the
cue-ball was 'landing' as it hit the one-ball.

The outstanding thing about Shane's break is his accuracy with speed.

my opinion, of course

ps...if you want another example of a cue-ball hitting the weight of
more than one ball, try drawing off a three ball combination...you
will draw a lot farther. ( the three balls must be froze)

ok will hiting the head ball with just above center on the cb work if you breaking from say the right side rail ??

No, the ball wont go airborn with slight follow.....that would be a squat break. Hit it below center if you want the ball to bounce its way towards the 1. That will give you the effect you want, but its really hard to bounce it just right. If you cant get it right, try moving the cue ball back a bit. Provided you break consistently, that will change the point where the cue ball lands on the final bounce.

If the cue-ball is spinning, there is energy in the spin.
If the cue-ball is not spinning, the energy is all in the forward motion.

If you put a ball, a cylinder, and a cube on a frictionless slide and
release them at the same time, the cube will get to the bottom quicker.
The ball and cylinder ROLL, and that takes energy away from the forward
motion.

So the quickest cue ball is 'dead center' and also tends to be the most accurate.

Mike: You just want to hit the cue ball 1/4 inch above dead center but elevate the butt about 6-8 inches. This will make the cue ball bounce up and will put a little follow on it also.
