9 ball break

I have been watching the Mosconi cup for the last two days. I have seen many breaks. I have always been under the impression that when you break, even it is off the side rail, that you want to hit the one ball straight on. If all goes well the cue ball should end up close to the center of the table. This way if the one does not go into the side it will end up near the end rail and you have a shot at it.
It appears that all of the cue balls on the breaks at the M. C. are going to the side rail. It appears that the players are hitting the one on the side so that is caroms off of the second ball and goes into the side.
Is this what they are doing?

one thing is different there. At Mosconi cup they rack different. The 9 ball is on the spot, where if they rack in the states, usually 1 ball sits.

yuppers... 9ball on the spot means you are trying to cut the break break the 1 off the front of the rack into the side... That's what causing the the illegal breaks... not enough energy into the rack and the wing ball is hitting high and causing collisions when it doesn't go to boot.....
