ok im totally loving the new table in the basement, and one of the things i love most is my new ability to try things out as much as i like, when ever the urge hits me :). In the past on break cue threads, ive said that i didnt see all that much difference in them, ones as good as the next basically, and after some personal research i need to retract that statement. Ive been mostly breaking at home with a housecue or a pretty inexpensive j&j jb, and i thought i was doing ok. Well this past week i decided to get out my old sledgehammer and break with it some. This cue i never really used, i bought it when the jumpbreak fad started rolling back in 2002 2003, and everybody wanted to use it so i ended up putting it in the case and buying the j&j (the sledge cost me over 200). Anyway, I was really shocked at how much better the sledge was for my game, i consistently made more balls on the break, parked the cueball in the middle of the table, and had better looking racks to work with. For instance I will do little 5 game races with the ghost, last night i won 3 out of 5 without even taking ball in hand after the break, i could never do that with my j&j. I dont know if its the larger diameter shaft on the sledge or what, but its one of those "see it with your own eyes" kind of things that really surprised me.

The J&J has a 14mm shaft, the largest permitted, so you sledge can not be bigger. I have calipers and have measured it myself.

What tip does the sledge have?
 
For me, breaking depends on 3 things, size tip, material tip and stiffness shaft. My personal preference is 14mm, white diamond, extreem stiff shaft.

So, I'm wondering, what kind of tip do you have on your cues? The J&J mostly have a phenolic tips, which I don't like it at all. No grip at all and gives me two problems: 1) if your stroke isn't perfect, the CB deflects to much and hit the wrong spot and 2) you can't use spin/english, so I can't break using a stop shot.

You shouldn't say the sledgehammer is breaking better than the J&J. You schould search the difference between those two breakcues, and knowing what makes it.
 
well i thought they both had phenolic tips on them.....im pretty sure the j&J does, the sledge has whatever tip mike was using back then. I didnt realise the j&j was 14mm too, i should have gotten out my calipers instead of assuming. I do hear more of a "clink" when i break with the j&j, but i think both cues are the same length and weight. Ill have to investigate this some more tonight.
 
The MC Sledgehammer got a 13mm phenolic tip. Is there any differents in wraps? I like to play with no wraps, it gives me more power.
 
I like a 18 oz 14mm Break Cue (Tip Size) on a shaft with a Break Cue Taper, with a REAL HARD Leather tip, that has a flatter crown (50 cent piece or larger radius).

My Auerbach Custom Break Cue has all that.
